Pit Road And Engine Performance Highlight Win In Opening Race Of The 2010 Chase For The NASCAR Sprint Cup
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (Sept. 21, 2010) -- Clint Bowyer came into the opening race of the 2010 Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup as the 12th-seeded driver, having held off tough competition to secure that final spot. He left with an impressive win in the Sylvania 300 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, picking up 10 spots in the standings and collecting five post-race contingency awards.
The No. 33 Cheerios Chevrolet team demonstrated a full-team effort as the Richard Childress Racing captured the DirecTV Crew Chief of the Race Award, Tissot "Pit Road Precision" Award, MAHLE Clevite Engine Builder of the Race, Sunoco Diamond Performance and WIX Filters Lap Leader of the Race Award.
For the engine team at Earnhardt Childress Racing Engines (ECRE), it was another stellar performance in bringing home the MAHLE Clevite Engine Builder of the Race Award, their sixth overall weekly award of the season. It was crew chief Shane Wilson's first DirecTV Crew Chief of the Race Award, earned by the crew chief that demonstrates the best qualifying and race efforts. Also, the No. 33 pit crew won their second Tissot "Pit Road Precision" Award of the year, awarded to the eligible team that spends the least amount of time on pit road and finishes on the lead lap.
The awards are part of the NASCAR Prize Money and Decal Program, also referred to as the contingency program, which provides prize money and weekly awards based on performance in several categories.
Bowyer, who started second, led seven times for 177 laps, capturing the WIX Filters Lap Leader of the Race Award and strong work by the pit crew enabled the No. 33 Chevrolet to spend the least amount of time on pit road, giving Bowyer a chance to stay in the front of the pack.
Bowyer and the No. 14 Office Depot/Old Spice Chevrolet of Tony Stewart battled up front for the majority of the second half of the race until Stewart ran short on fuel with just two laps remaining, allowing Bowyer to return to the lead and take the checkered flag, holding off a charge from the No. 11 FedEx Office Toyota of Denny Hamlin.
"Two weeks ago, going into Richmond, you could feel the confidence level in our race team, in our equipment level; everything was good," said Clint Bowyer. "Shane built a brand new race car and we came here and we were fast right off the truck. Everybody had a lot of confidence, a pep in their step and we showed it from the time we unloaded to qualifying, practice, we were one of the fastest cars here."
Crew chief Wilson added, "We've had a lot of races where we've performed good enough to win the first two thirds of the race, so glad today to kind of finish one out. Circumstances allowed us to win this one but we were fast all day, and lost it a little bit there in the middle, in the last run we were pretty good. Just proud of all my guys that worked through it."
Bowyer's win was his first of the 2010 season and his third career victory. He currently stands in second in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series standings, just 35 points behind Hamlin.
"I think this sport is as good as it's been," Bowyer said. "The fan turnout this weekend was awesome, and more importantly, I think this Chase is going to be as close as it's ever been. I mean, when the 12 seed wins the first race, it just shows you the level of competition in this Chase."
