Mike Skinner posts top-25 finish in Sylvania 300

LOUDON, N.H. (Sept. 14, 2003) -- Mike Skinner recorded his second straight top-25 finish here today in the Sylvania 300 at New Hampshire International Raceway.

Handling the controls of the No. 01 U.S. Army Pontiac, Skinner recorded a 22nd-place finish in his sixth start with the MB2 Motorsports team.

The Florida resident found himself wondering what could've been after absorbing a late race "pass through" penalty for entering pit road too fast.

"We had a good car and stayed on the lead lap all day and then we got bit late," said a visibly upset Skinner. "It's really a shame, too. I'm not so sure we did what they (NASCAR) said we did. There's got to be a better way to police this kind of stuff."

Skinner took the green flag for the 300-lap event in the 14th starting spot and he proceeded to stay in the top-20 for much of the race. He even had a stint in the top-10. But, following his last pit stop of the day on lap 260, the penalty flag came out and the opportunity for advancement came to a halt.

"The guys did an awesome job," added Skinner. "I really appreciate everybody's efforts. Who knows where we may have ended up if not for the penalty. Next week is another week."

The U.S. Army team will now head for Dover (Del.) International Speedway for next weekend's Dover 400.
