RUMBLINGS FOR NEW HAMPSHIRE
They call this place the Magic Mile, but the #99 Exide team sure didn't need any magic today. When Jeff Burton beat 'em out of the pits on lap 196, the only question left to be answered was when would they stop for their splash & go. Burton led all but 7 of the last 105 laps, as well as leading the most laps with 99 (there's that number again).
Kim Burton better get used to this.....if not, she's gonna dehydrate <G>.
Burton's win moves him from 92nd to 75th in the all-time standings. Other active drivers with 2 wins include Derrike Cope & Jimmy Spencer....there are _no_ active drivers with 3 wins.
Kinda surprised we saw the "Got a Driver, Mario" commercial today. If he does, Yates isn't talking <G>. I'd guess that Texaco is gonna run those parrots to death in the meantime.....
"THE STREAK" is now at 44 and counting....but for Dale Earnhardt, this was his 4th runner-up finish since his last victory.
Steve Grissom had a career best today. His previous best was a 5th at Rockingham last February. This was only his second Top-10 finish of the season.
Geoff Bodine bounced back with his best finish since Pocono last month....sure beats going home early.
Hut Stricklin's 15th place finish was his second best of the season. His only other Top-15 this year was a 14th place run at Martinsville.
STREAKIN....Mark Martin now has 10 Top-10's in the last 11 races.... he also has 9 Top-5's in those same 11 races.
This weeks elevator....UP: The operator of the week is Stricklin (+25), and Earnhardt (+24). DOWN: The big dropper was Dale Jarrett (-33), Jerry Nadeau (-30), Bobby Hamilton (-29), Chad Little (-26), and Joe Nemechek (-21). Lots more losers than gainers this week.
Terry Labonte's run (coupled with Jeff Gordon's troubles) gives us a new points leader again this week. Thru the first 17 races, we've had 3 different points leaders. Jeff Gordon has led the points on 7 occasions, Dale Jarrett 6, and this is the 4th time this year that Texas Terry has been in the penthouse.
No big movement in the points, tho. John Andretti moves up (24th to 22nd) along with Grissom (29th to 27th). Falling 3 positions each were Bobby Hamilton (18th to 21st) and Morgan Shepherd (25th to 28th). Hamilton's free-fall continues....he's fallen 12 spots in just the last 8 races.
In the cash department, the Unocal Challenge will be worth $53,200 next week, and the Winston Leader Bonus worth $30,000. The leader bonus hasn't been hit since California (Jeff Gordon), while the last time anybody cashed the Unocal check was Gordon again (at the Charlotte 499.5).
Next week it's back to Pocono....hey weren't we just there 6 weeks ago? Clear those honeymooners out....it's time to go racing again!
