MARK MARTIN-6-Pfizer/Viagra Taurus (second place)
IF YOU WERE SET ON FUEL, WHY DID YOU PIT WHEN THE CAUTION CAME OUT? "It was that for fear that not be fast enough on those tires with nine laps on them, so we chose to come and get four, which was my choice. The question came up for two, didn't look like a very good idea the first five laps. I thought, 'Made a bad call,' but as it turned out it was the right call. The car, prior to that last stop under the green, we just backed it way down, saving gas, we were stretching it and saving gas, so I sorta backed it down. So we had a pretty fast race car at the end of the race, but it wasn't spectacular the first half. Our team did a great job getting it better throughout the race. They really fought hard."
WITHOUT THE YELLOW, YOU PRETTY MUCH HAD IT IN HAND? "All we had to go was one lap further than we had just gone, and we felt like it would be easy because what I could do was start backing off knowing that everybody else had to stop, I could've running half-throttle down the straightaways and really started saving some extra gas when it came right down to it where I could let people go on that were pitting. So, we feel that we would've been able to cover it."
WHAT DID YOU SAY WHEN YOU SAW THE YELLOW? "We just don't seem to ever win 'em on fuel mileage. A lot of other people seem to do it, but the caution always seems to come out when we're set to do it. So, I don't know. Some day we will. We did get one at Dover several years ago, stole one from Kyle Petty, who had to stop for gas. And we'll get another one one day. I'm not complaining. We finished second today, that ain't all bad."
WAS PATIENCE THE KEY? YOU SET YOURSELF UP TO GET TO THE FRONT. "Based on them having to pit one more time than us, that's about the only way we were going to do it there. We kept backing up to save fuel based on everybody in front of us needing to stop, when it came down to it I wasn't fast enough to win the race, but we weren't shabby, either, so I'm pretty proud of this team."
WITH ALL PRACTICE AND QUALIFYING CANCELLED ON FRIDAY, HOW DID THAT PLAY INTO YOUR STRATEGY TODAY? "It really didn't. We got the same old schedule on Saturday, so everything was normal. The track was fine."
