Up And Down Night For Leffler In Richmond
No. 01 Cingular Wireless Dodge finishes 28th
RICHMOND, Va. (September 8, 2001) -- The No. 01 Cingular Wireless Dodge R/T driven by rookie driver Jason Leffler finished 28th in the Chevrolet Monte Carlo 400 at Richmond International Raceway. Leffler is tied for fourth in the Raybestos Rookie of the Year points standings.
Leffler started the event in 42nd position and moved up to 39th place by lap 11. Early in the event, Leffler radioed in that the car was tight in the center and loose off. The Cingular Wireless crew worked on the car during the first few pit stops and by lap 165 Leffler was pleased with the setup. By lap 253, Leffler moved up to 26th position but two laps later he scrapped the wall on the front stretch and the team had to make more adjustments on the car during the next few cautions.
"The day could have been a lot better but the guys did a really good job," Leffler said. "We got a bad start tonight after crashing in qualifying. But we got the car adjusted real good during the race but then I tagged the wall and we had to make some more adjustments to straighten it out."
Matt Chambers, crew chief of the No. 01 Cingular Wireless Dodge, was looking for a better finish at the second round at Richmond.
"We had a pretty good car today," Chambers said. "It wasn't that great at the start of the race but we adjusted on it during the first few pit stops and got it real good. We had a pretty good car but we got into the wall on the front straightaway and it messed up our setup. We came in and worked on it two or three pit stops in a row to try and get it right. We were 26th here in the Spring so we were hoping to gain on that some."
Next on the schedule for the No. 01 Cingular Wireless team is the New Hampshire 300 at New Hampshire International Speedway on Sunday, Sept. 16.
