LAS VEGAS - During the largest day of NASCAR testing ever west of the Mississippi, Todd Bodine showed that he is a force to be reckoned with in the March 4 running of the UAW-DaimlerChrysler 400 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
Bodine posted a lap time of 31.908 seconds (169.237 miles per hour), which was slightly faster than Joe Nemechek's 31.933 (169.104 mph). In all, 24 NASCAR Winston Cup teams participated in Tuesday's test session on LVMS' 1.5-mile superspeedway.
NASCAR officials also were on hand to experiment with some possible aerodynamic adjustments that may be made before the teams return to Las Vegas for the UAW-DaimlerChrysler 400. Drivers Dale Earnhardt, Jeff Gordon, Jerry Nadeau and Nemechek tried different components to affect the aerodynamics of the cars.
"We are trying to see what different things will do in certain situations," said NASCAR Winston Cup Series Director of Gary Nelson. "We will try some more things (Wednesday), and then we'll talk to the drivers and process the information and see what all we learned."
Nelson indicated that Dale Jarrett and Rusty Wallace would try some of the new packages on Wednesday.
Las Vegas drivers Kurt Busch and Brendan Gaughan also had solid days. Busch's speed of 167.416 mph came one day after he crashed his primary test car. Busch's speed was seventh best on the speed chart. Gaughan, who will attempt to make his first ever NASCAR Winston Cup Series race at LVMS, was one notch behind at 167.406 mph.
For the second consecutive day, Greg Biffle paced a field of NASCAR Busch
Series drivers who were preparing for the Sam's Town 300 on March 3. Biffle turned a lap of 166.359 miles per hour, which was considerably faster than Chad Little's 165.299 mph. There were 11 NASCAR Busch Series teams who participated in Tuesday's test.
