Early Accident Stifles Nemechek's Momentum in Vegas
LAS VEGAS (March 11, 2007) -- Joe Nemechek and his No. 13 CertainTeed crew entered Sunday's Nextel Cup event with plenty of optimism which was based on a strong qualifying performance Friday and two excellent practice sessions on Saturday.
And when the green flag dropped to start the 400-mile event at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Nemechek continued to like everything about how his Chevrolet was handling on the slippery 1.5-mile oval. "The car is good," Nemechek radioed the crew after an early caution.
It wasn't too much longer after telling the crew how well the race was going when trouble struck the No. 13 team. Running in 13th place, Nemechek's machine was turned sideways when the 07 car (Clint Bowyer) rammed into its left-rear quarter panel on Lap 17 of 267. The incident sent the CertainTeed Chevy into the wall, causing extensive damage to the rear-end.
Nemechek eventually drove to the garage where the crew repaired the entire rear-end housing. Nemechek's crippled car returned to the track on Lap 102. He was credited with a 38th-place finish.
"I feel bad for the entire CertainTeed Chevrolet team," said Nemechek. "We had a great car -- we were fast in every practice. I was running the high line, the tires were coming in and everything was right. And the next thing I know I'm being turned around. It's just unfortunate. I don't know what Clint Bowyer was thinking. It was way too early in the race and tires are way too tough to be touching each other."
The frustrating finish dropped Nemechek from seventh in the driver point standings to 20th.
The next race for the Nextel Cup Series will be Sunday (March 18) at Atlanta Motor Speedway.
