JAMIE McMURRAY (No. 42 Texaco/Havoline Dodge)
"I critized the motors last year, and I didn't get around anyone today with a better motor. Our program is really strong right now. To fight back from where we were was really good. I didn't see a lot of difference. It was slow and slick. Forward bite is the big issue. It seems like you get tight in the middle and when I got around the 9 car at the end I got really loose.
"I got into trouble early, and fortunately I didn't go a lap down. We were getting really close. The caution came out and I got to come in. The right front fender got knocked in. It's unreal at a place like this what an inch on the fender can do. It went from terrible to really pretty good when we pulled it out.
"I thought we might have a shot at the end, but I never could get up there. At the end, I was going to let the 9 and 20 go. When I started letting off early, I started catching them again. It's one of those deals where you overdrive, but you do the best you can.
"We were tight pretty much all day and just kept sneaking up on it. At the end we were really good for about 40 laps. It looked like we were catching the 29 and 17. You have to have some luck for sure."
RUSTY WALLACE (No. 2 Miller Lite Dodge)
"We pulled out a top-10 finish, but I think we really had a top-five car. We just need to work on our pit stops. We got way behind on one of them today. The guys did a great job giving me a good car, but we've got to work on those pit stops if we're going to break this losing streak."
JEREMY MAYFIELD (No. 19 Dodge Dealers/UAW Dodge)
"We just didn't run very good today. Overall it was a good day, but we just missed it from yesterday. We were a lot better than that in practice yesterday. I guess the track conditions changed or something. We got tight and never could free it up."
BILL ELLIOTT (No. 91 UAW/DaimlerChrysler/NTC Dodge)
"We were OK. Our car was pretty decent. Our team worked hard to make us competitive, but we just couldn't get any traction. The new Evernham chassis was pretty good. We learned a lot about it, so we can go do some more work on it."
NOTE: Elliott's next race in the No. 91 Evernham Motorsports Dodge will be at Texas Motor Speedway.
CASEY MEARS (No. 41 Target Dodge)
"We've been working hard and it paid off today. That's the best finish of my career, and it feels great running up front. I thought we might have a shot at the top five, but it's hard to complain too much about seventh. The guys did a great job, and we even cracked the top 10 in the point standings. I can't wait to get to Atlanta, and we're sure going to try to take this momentum with us."
RYAN NEWMAN (No. 12 ALLTEL Dodge)
"The guys never gave up, but we just didn't get it right. We got lucky keeping it off the wall, but we just didn't hit it today."
KYLE PETTY (No. 45 Georgia-Pacific/Brawny Dodge)
"We stayed out of trouble and kept plugging away and got a decent finish. The team really deserved it, and we'll try to build on this and keep trying to improve."
BRENDAN GAUGHAN (No. 77 Kodak Easy Share Dodge)
"Buddy Baker came in afterwards, and I told him I never wanted to work that hard for a 22nd place finish again. The Penske/Jasper guys never gave up. They ended up getting the Kodak Dodge pretty good for a couple of laps. We got our lap back and dug hard. They had a pit stop to keep us ahead of everybody so we could be the Lucky Dog. We drove our butts off on the racetrack and got it. That was a nice deal. We made one too many adjustments and it was too loose again. It was just hang on for the ride after that. We brought it home in one piece, and that's always a bonus.
"We were fighting it most of the day. We were chasing it. The guys worked their tails off making adjustments on every stop. They never gave up. We were the second Raybestos Rookie of the Day, and that's points for the Raybestos Rookie race. That's half the battle.
"The fans here are great to me. I loved how they cheered for me when I went across the stage. I wish I could have given them better show. Well, we did give them a hell of a show. We were exciting to watch a few times, but hopefully we'll come back next year and run up front."
