Gilliland Drives Capital Window Chevy to 14th in Shelby 427
Las Vegas, Nevada (March 1, 2009) - David Gilliland drove the No. 71 Capital Window/TRG Motorsports/Chevrolet Impala SS to an impressive 14th place finish in today's NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Shelby 427 race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
Gilliland ran a strategic race in a strong car to bring the team their first top 15 finish in NASCAR Sprint Cup competition. Although going down a lap early due to a vibration, the team was able to soldier back and run as high 12th in the race.
"It was awesome today," Gilliland said. "I am so excited for TRG Motorsports and Capital Window, which came on board this weekend. What we have been able to do with this deal in two weeks is absolutely incredible, I can't believe it. I am very proud of the guys, they did a great job. Wow!"
The car got better as the race progressed with Gilliland nearly matching the lap times of the leaders.
"We were closer with the handling in practice and had it pretty good in the last session yesterday. We had a week under our belt. Everyone came here straight from California and prepped the same car we ran there and we were able to get a great result for the team. That is what it takes. Man, 14th, I am really happy for all of the partners at TRG Motorsports who have hung their neck out on the line to make this deal possible. Kevin Buckler and everybody gave me a great opportunity and we are making the most of it."
Team principal, Kevin Buckler, has assembled a tight-knit group of guys that are making the most of a limited budget.
"What a great run by David today!" Buckler said. "The guys worked really hard in practice and the car was fast and ready for the race. That is a testament to the team work and the group of guys we have here. I am so proud of everybody. David and Slugger are really clicking and we just have to keep getting the resources to carry this forward. A 14th place finish for us is huge! Our super streamlined and efficient business model is working. We now have some more respect in the garage and we are going to continue to work hard and earn our place in this competitive sport. We will also keep our focus on getting sponsorship under this team."
The team will travel next weekend to Atlanta Motor Speedway for the Kobalt Tools 500.
