Mears grabs top-15 finish at Las Vegas.
Las Vegas, Nev. (March 2, 2003) --- Casey Mears drove the #41 Target Dodge to it's first top-15 finish of the season at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on Sunday. Mears was the highest finishing Raybestos Rookie of the Year candidate, finishing the UAW-DaimlerChrysler 400 in 15th place - a solid performance for Team Target.
Mears qualified for his second career Las Vegas race in 18th position. He fought a tight car in the beginning stages of the race but a Team Target pit stop on lap 58 gave Mears the adjustments he needed to start moving through the pack. He went from 23rd to 19th in 30 laps and Mears was running some of the quickest lap times on the track.
Later in the race, track changes made the Target Dodge tight again and the Team Target pit crew continued to make adjustments on the car all day. Mears continued to race in the top 25 while the team worked on loosening his car. Smart communication and teamwork helped Mears take the checkered flag in 15th place at the end of the day. Mears currently sits in 25th position for the NASCAR Winston Cup Championship.
"It was just a good solid run," Mears said. "We didn't do anything special. We weren't blazing fast or anything but we had a good solid run. We qualified 18th and finished 15th and you've got to feel pretty good about that. Being the highest finishing Raybestos Rookie feels real good. Obviously, there are a lot of new guys all in good equipment. We ran a good solid race. The Target guys did a great job in the pits and it feels good to be inside the top-15."
"We've had a good car everywhere we've gone but where we've finished this year really hasn't been a result of how well we've been doing," Mears said. "It's just been a result of the circumstances. So it feels good to finally get a result that we deserved."
Team Target will race at Atlanta Motor Speedway this upcoming weekend.
