DE GARMO HOLDS OFF NUTTLEMAN FOR FIRST-EVER FEATURE
by David W. Morgan

(West Salem August 5, 2000) - Marv DeGarmo started racing late models in West Salem in the 1970's, battling the likes of Dick Trickle, Tom Reffner, Marv Marzofka and many more of the heroes of both todays race fans, and many of today's racers as well. After taking 15 years off from the sport, he came back into the sportsman ranks in the mid nineties, and moved up to the NASCAR Late Models three seasons ago. On Saturday night, he jumped to the lead just before an early caution, then held off the man who has won more features in West Salem than all but one driver, as he earned his first-ever late model feature.

Kraig Burrows took the lead from the inside of the front row, and led the first two laps before DeGarmo moved by on the outside for the lead. On lap four, the only caution of the race flew, as Todd Oliver and Troy Goodenough tangled in turn three, with Oliver brushing the wall and backing down into the infield.

DeGarmo opened up a three-second advantage as Burrows battled Kurt Thicke for second. Thicke got by on lap 12, with Tony Bagstad following by into third. Thicke started closing in on DeGarmo, as Bagstad and Kevin Nuttleman closed in on the lead two. Nuttleman took third from Bagstad n lap 19, and got by Thicke on the final lap for second, but DeGarmo held him off for his first-ever win.

Thicke took third, followed by Paul Proksch, Bagstad, Brad Powell, and Steve Holzhausen. Mike Belling Rick Wateski and Burrows rounded out the top ten.

Bill Niles took the opening heat, with J. Herbst taking heat two. The twin Bud Dashes went to Rick Wateski and Mike Belling.

You could forgive Grand National Sportsman winner Dan Gilster for not relishing his feature win. While he was taking fourth in his Bud Dash, his wife left the racetrack for the hospital, after going into labor with their first child. Gilster charged to the feature win, and learned of his wife's labor in Victory Lane from PA Announcer Kieran Clark.

Greg Scheck led from the start of the Ray Hutson Chevrolet Sportsman feature, but on lap six, Don Henderson spun in turn three, and Morris Proctor came roaring into turn, spinning Dave Tradup, and running Todd Lockington into, and up onto the turn three wall, bringing out the yellow. Chuck Timm took over the lead on the restart, with Corey Jankowski and Gilster following by on the outside to move to the front. Jankowski used the outside line to pull alongside Timm on lap eight, as the top three pulled away from the rest of the field.

Gilster moved to second on lap 12, and started looking to the outside of Timm for the lead. Gilster worked his way by, and into the lead at the white flag, as he took his second feature win of the season. Timm finished second, Kevin Eddy, Scheck and Tony Ciano.

Sportsman heats went to Dan Steele and Todd Lockington, while Don Henderson and Rick Shisler won the Bud Dashes.

Joey Johnson led the first five laps of the United Auto Supply Thunderstox feature, but a bump on the backstretch on lap six allowed John Olson to get by him and into the lead just before the yellow flew on lap seven. Dan Secor and Jes Tenner got their bumpers caught together on the backstretch, and as they tried to separate, they drove Danielle Neary up and onto the wall in turn three. Secor then took a hard left, with Tenner's bumper coming loose as the whip cracked.

Dale Jacob and Adam Degenhardt closed on Olson down the stretch, with Jacob ducking underneath Olson at the white flag. On the final lap, Olson tried to battle Jacob, but slid high in turns one and two, allowing Jacob, Degenhardt and Jason Bolster to get by at the checkered flag. Olson took fourth, followed by Les Stanfield.

Heat winners included Branden Berg, Dan Secor and Dale Jacob, while the Bud Dash win went to Al Bartels and Jes Tenner celebrated his 21st Birthday a little early with a win in the B-Main.
