After posting the top speed on Friday in first practice, he had the fastest car in Happy Hour with a single-lap speed of 157.411mph. Larson’s fifth-place qualifying effort also led the Bow-tie brigade on Friday at the Monster Mile.

“We were really good in practice and I didn’t feel very good that first run, but we still weren’t really fast and my front-end was just working way too good,” Larson said. “Landing in the corner it was kind of getting me upset and the final round it got better, but our exit was too tight.

“I made a couple of mistakes the last couple of weeks,” Larson said. “Gotta clean that up and get back to Victory Lane.”

The first caution occurred six minutes into the session when Cole Whitt’s car stalled at the end of pit road. Jimmie Johnson was atop the leader board with a speed of 157.301mph followed by Kyle Busch (157.246mph), Matt Kenseth, Kevin Harvick and Kurt Busch — all with a lap of 157.143mph. Daniel Suarez (157.116mph), Martin Truex Jr. (157.061mph), Jamie McMurray (156.781mph), Chase Elliott (156.753mph) and Clint Bowyer (156.706mph) rounded out the top 10.

After the track returned to green, Kyle Larson shot up to the top of the chart with a lap of 157.411mph. Truex moved up to fourth with a lap of 157.143mph.

Midway through the 55-minute session, Larson remained at the top of the speed chart followed by Johnson, Kyle Busch, Truex, Kenseth, Harvick, Kurt Busch, Daniel Suarez, McMurray and Elliott.

The top-10 single lap speeds had not changed with 10 minutes remaining. Blaney, 15th-quick with a lap of 156.230mph, reported that the No. 21 Motorcraft Ford was tight in traffic.

Larson’s 60 laps completed were the most among the Monster Energy Cup Series drivers.
