KURT BUSCH --97-- Sharpie/Rubbermaid Taurus (Finished 5th)
"It's an awesome run for the Sharpie guys and the Rubbermaid team. They did what they needed to do today. It's been a struggle as of late, but this is what we needed to do to get back in the rookie points game and get us some consistent top fives. This is a track where I thought I could do well because it's flat and it's wide."
WERE YOU PINCHING YOURSELF OUT THERE SEEING YOURSELF IN THE TOP THREE?
"I thought if we could ever get track position we'd be alright, but we just never seemed to be able to do that. When we got stuck back there in the traffic we just got a little bit of a tight condition and and we just couldn't get down the straightaway like we needed to. It's probably because we were too aggressive in turns two and four, but, all in all, a great run. I learned a lot about this place. This is a treat to drive, this Indianapolis Motor Speedway."
YOU WERE PLAYING THE FUEL MILEAGE GAME, SO YOU MUST HAVE HATED TO SEE THAT CAUTION COME OUT.
"We always seem to play the fuel mileage game and it never turns out. You sacrifice horsepower for that and it seems like it never turns out. It turned out once so far this year at Charlotte."
YOU'VE STRUGGLED OF LATE. DID YOU FIND SOMETHING IN YOUR TEST HERE?
"No, nothing fell off this race. I didn't have a water heater in like I had at Loudon. It's just been just bum luck on the race track. We've been fairly good at most tracks. Sonoma was a very dismal run for us. We finished 24th and just kind of hung out in the back all day, but we've just had a lot of bad luck on our side. We've had conditions where we've been running 11th, like last week. We were the highest running rookie with 30 laps to go and then the wheel falls off and we finish as the last place rookie and finished 37th. It's just been a struggle. That's what a rookie team is supposed to go through and supposed to weed out. We've done a great job getting used to the new crew chief (Ben Leslie). Ben came aboard from the 17 DEWALT car and he's now taken the reins and is guiding us in the right direction."
WHAT ABOUT YOUR FIRST RACE AT INDY? WAS IT OVERWHELMING AT ALL WITH ALL THESE FANS?
"It was just a wonderful treat to even drive here. This is quite a unique race track and it's my pleasure just to even drive here. It was just a great invite by Jack Roush to give me this opportunity and to drive around here testing a few months ago and actually get into race conditions today, it's just a wonderful treat to drive. All four corners give you a different challenge and the setup is quite different from most tracks. To get that experience here -- this place is where racing evolved around the early 1900s. It was here where everybody started to race and it evolved down to Daytona and the Charlotte area, of course, but this is where racing started and this is quite a treat."
