DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (July 5, 2002) - Kevin Harvick drove his No. 29 GM Goodwrench Service Chevrolet to his first career pole during Bud Pole during Pepsi 400 qualifying on Friday. Harvick led the field with a speed of 185.041 mph and will lead the field for the 44th annual Pepsi 400 on July 6 at Daytona International Speedway.

"We've been a little bit behind," said Harvick. "Richard (Childress) has really been on everybody in the motor department and the fab shop and they all stepped it up.

"Everything came together and they ripped off a lap. I didn't do anything but ride around in it and that's just a tribute to the GM Goodwrench team and every person at RCR."

Geoffrey Bodine, wheeling the No. 09 Ford for owner James Finch, qualified second with a fast time of 184.373, while defending NASCAR Winston Cup Series Champion Jeff Gordon turned a lap at 184.271 and will start third.

"We're real happy," said Gordon. "We've made a conscious effort to make some gains for qualifying. We feel like we've got a lot on the line this weekend with the Winston No Bull and with the new color scheme that we have this weekend with the DuPont Pepsi car."

Rounding out the top five are Robby Gordon and his No. 31 Cingular Wireless Chevrolet in fourth. Dale Jarrett's No. 88 UPS Ford will start fifth.

Johnny Benson will start sixth in his Valvoline Pontiac with a speed of 183.887 and was the fastest Pontiac on the day. Casey Atwood will start 10th in his Sirius Satellite Radio with the fastest Dodge on the day.

"I'm real happy with that," said Atwood. "It's nothing that I did. We weren't that good yesterday in practice and the guys worked all night."

Great seats remain for the NASCAR Winston Cup Series Pepsi 400 on Saturday and fans can purchase tickets by calling the ticket office at (368) 253-RACE (7223).
