Kenseth takes first Duel

Exciting finish to the first of two Duels tonight.

Daytona Beach, Fla. – In a three-wide finish, Matt Kenseth raced to victory in the opening Budweiser Duel at the Daytona International Speedway on Thursday evening, being run under the lights for the first time.

“I had a strong Toyota Camry,” the victor said. “When Kevin (Harvick) and Dale (Earnhardt) made their moves, I was fortunate enough to get back to the finish. This gives me momentum going into Sunday.”

Harvick pushed his Budweiser Chevrolet to second followed by Kasey Kahne and Marcos Ambrose. Earnhardt slid to fifth at the end.

Sixth through 10th were Josh Wise, Aric Almirola, A. J. Allmendinger, David Gilliland and Ryan Newman.

Needing to finish 15th or better to claim a starting spot in the Daytona 500 were Cole Whitt, Wise and Alex Bowman. Whitt advanced from 18th to 12th on the final lap.

Pole winner Austin Dillon led early laps before intentionally falling to the rear of the field to preserve his car.

No caution flags unfolded.
