IRWIN NEAR TRACK RECORD IN TEXAS BUSCH SERIES TEST
FORT WORTH-DALLAS (March 16, 1999) - Kenny Irwin, Jr. knows Texas Motor Speedway well. He won the inaugural NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race at the 1.5-mile superspeedway in 1997.
Irwin proved his knowledge of the speedway Monday and Tuesday as he posted near record speeds in the debut of the Rayovac Maximum Taurus NASCAR Busch Series team. The team, owned by NASCAR Winston Cup driver Dale Jarrett and NFL Green Bay Packer quarterback Brett Favre, will make its 1999 Busch debut at the March 27 Coca-Cola 300 at Texas Motor Speedway.
Irwin tested in both race setup and in full qualifying mode. The 1998 Winston Cup Rookie-of-the-Year posted unofficial speeds of 180 mph set up for qualifying which is just under Jeff Green's Busch Series track record of 180.054 mph set in 1997.
"The speedway is so different from 1998," Irwin said, referring to the $3 million in renovations made to the surface following last year's NASCAR weekend. "There's so much more room entering Turn One -- there's more room all the way around. We were very pleased with our test sessions. We're ready to race."
Irwin will join 21 other Winston Cup drivers entered for the Coca-Cola 300. Leading the Winston Cup drivers entered in the Busch Series race are Jeff Gordon, Mark Martin and Jeff Burton. Busch Series champion Dale Earnhardt, Jr. will defend the series honors along with Matt Kenseth, Mike McLaughlin, Adam Petty and Kerry Earnhardt.
Tickets for the Coca-Cola 300 may be purchased at the speedway ticket office, through the speedway ticket hotline at (817) 215-8500, on-line at www.texasmotorspeedway.com and at all TicketMaster locations.
