KEN SCHRADER CALIFORNIA SPEEDWAY
"California is a fairly flat track with wide, sweeping turns like Las Vegas Motor Speedway," said Schrader. "With the turns being wide, you're able to pass all the way through the turns. The Skoal Racing team has had some bad breaks the last two years. The first year we were there we had motor trouble and last year we were involved in a big wreck on the frontstretch, but both years we had good cars.
"Last week was a good run for both Andy Petree Racing teams. We proved how teammates could really help each other during the race. Kenny (Wallace) got in line behind me and we pushed our way to a sixth and seventh-place finish. Sammy and the entire Skoal Racing team have been really working hard at improving our race finishes. The last two weeks have definitely been an improvement."
"I was real proud of the way the guys on the team worked together last weekend," said crew chief Sam Johns. "They worked hard at preparing a car good enough to get the pole and Schrader went out and got the job done on the track. Schrader drove a smart race. He stayed in line when he needed to and made a move to pass when the time was right. Last weekend's race proved how well teammates can benefit each other. Schrader helped Kenny (Wallace) get to the front and they both benefited by finishing sixth (Schrader) and seventh (Wallace).
"We're taking the same car we raced at Las Vegas and Texas. We are certain it is a good race car, but we've had to make a few adjustments to improve a few areas. Terry Satchell, our engineer, and the guys at the shop have worked real hard at improving the car. We're hoping the changes will be evident once we get on the track Friday."
Schrader will compete in Saturday's NASCAR Winston West event with the No. 15 Oakwood Homes Chevrolet. He won both NASCAR Winston West events at California Speedway, which makes him the first repeat winner at the track.
The Schraders will participate in the 1999 Kyle Petty Charity Ride Across America, which departs Ontario, Calif., Monday, May 3 and concludes in Trinity, N.C., on Sunday, May 9. Both will pilot their own motorcycles. They will only be able to ride Monday and Tuesday since the No. 33 Skoal Racing team will test at Lowe's Motor Speedway Wednesday and Thursday.
