Ken's NASCAR Silly Season Notebook - February 17, 1997

------------------------------------------- Please Note - Changes ahead ------------------------------------------- My apologies for not having a notebook out prior to Daytona. Things have been very hectic around lately, both at work and at home. Also, I've been thinking about moving this over to my personal email account for a couple of reasons. One important reason is the amount of junk mail I now get, which I believe is a result of posting to the Usenet group. The next mail note you get will likely come from a different account. If you don't see a note within a week or two, drop me a note to make sure I didn't miss you. Also, I've been too busy to update my web site, but I should be getting around to it very soon.

------------------------------------------- Bobby Allison Closes Shop ------------------------------------------- Bobby Allison has completely closed up his shop for the 1997 season, and does not plan to enter any races. Bobby hopes that he can regroup and open a new shop in '98. There are rumors going around Birmingham that Bobby is considering running for govenor of Alabama next year. In addition, he has gotten into the cellular phone business. He was in attendance at Daytona.

------------------------------------------- Bobby Allison Won't Drive Pace Car ------------------------------------------- Several rumors were circulating that Bobby Allison would drive the pace car this year, but NASCAR has named Robert Auton as the Winston Cup pace car driver. Auton has been a long time NASCAR official on the Winston Cup Series

------------------------------------------- Ford Motorsport Online ------------------------------------------- Ford got a home page about a year and a half after I uploaded my first page to the net, and now they finally have added a section devoted to Motorsport fans. Their site has up-to-date results, standings, and driver stats from the major series such as Formula One, PPG CART, NASCAR, World Championship Rally, Drag Racing, and many others. You can also explore the history of Ford in racing, or browse through the on-line motorsport mall. Find the really cool picture of a stock TBird being morphed into Mark Martin's #6 Winston Cup car.

------------------------------------------- Bud Moore Update ------------------------------------------- Larry Pearson failed to qualify the #15 Bud Moore car. Hayes has basically pulled out of NASCAR racing, and the team is still looking for help with sponsorship dollars. There is some discussion that they may not continue to attempt the full schedule, if a major sponsor cannot be found.

------------------------------------------- Huskers still in Hot Water ------------------------------------------- The Huskers deal with the #9 Melling Team continues to be a source of controversy. Apparently, no sponsorship money has been received, and Harry Melling will run a basic red car with no sponsorship for Daytona.

------------------------------------------- Marcis gets RealTree as sponsor ------------------------------------------- Davis Marcis has announced that RealTree will sponsor his car at Daytona. He is quoted as saying that Richard Childress helped influence the deal, as RealTree was sponsored Mike Skinner a few races last year. The hope is that the deal will also turn into a full season sponsorship.

------------------------------------------- New #91 Team Changes Owners ------------------------------------------- The #91 SPAM NASCAR Winston Cup team has recently made an ownership change from a partnership called Pro-Tech Motorsports, Inc. to a sole ownership now called L J Racing, Inc. The car owner will now be Joe Falk, and the team has hired Richmond Gage to be the General Manager over operations. Gage has years of experience in the management of NASCAR Winston Cup teams, Crew Chief is still Vic Kangas.
