------------------------------------------- Sabates & Petty Strike Back ------------------------------------------ Last week, Kyle Petty was penalized 5 laps for aggressive driving in the Coca Cola 600 at Charlotte, and car owner Felix Sabates jumped pit wall and expressed his displeasure with the ruling to a NASCAR official, which netted Kyle another 2 laps.

Later, Felix was still angry and told reporters that he felt Earnhardt got favoritism for his on-track antics. He also reportedly turned in his NASCAR credentials stating that he would not return for the rest of the year.

This week at Dover, Kyle Petty's team shows up with a Coor Light Pontiac painted in the same black & white color scheme and numbering style as Dale Earnhardt to further make his point, but without Felix Sabates. Apparently, the lettering on the back of the car is in spanish and translates to "All's fair in love and war." NASCAR has been hush-hush on the matter, and reportedly mailed back Sabates' credentials.

FWIW - Kyle Petty has yet to crack a top ten finishing position this year.

------------------------------------------- Geoff Bodine cracks the top ten ------------------------------------------- Geoff Bodine's 10th-place at Charlotte was his first top-10 finish of the season. In fact, Geoff had not finished in the top ten since the Goody's 500 in September of last year at Martinsville.

------------------------------------------- Dale Jarrett eligible for Winston Million ------------------------------------------- Dale Jarrett's win in last Sunday's Coca-Cola 600, along with his win in the Daytona 500, makes him eligible for the Winston Million this year. Bill Elliott, still recovering from a broken left femur, is the only driver ever to win the Winston Million (1985). Jarrett needs to win the Mountain Dew Southern 500 at Darlington on Sept. 1 to take home the prize.

------------------------------------------- Grissom to part ways with Diamond Ridge ------------------------------------------- Gary Bechtel, Diamond Ridge Motorsports team owner, has told Steve Grissom that he will not be driving the #29 Cartoon Network car for the '97 Winston Cup season and has given him the green light to negotiate future contracts. The team does plan to finish the '96 season with Grissom as the driver. Some reports say that he and crew chief (Bill Ingle) are not seeing eye to eye. Grissom also drives Bechtel's World Championship Wrestling Chevrolet in the Busch Series, but no word whether this impacts that ride as well.

------------------------------------------- Harry Gant's Truck gets sponsor ------------------------------------------- Harry Gant's #33 BB Motorsports NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series entry has a new primary sponsor caled Westview Capital, a financial services, money management and investment banking company in Greensboro, N.C. Associate sponsors will be Skoal Racing and Manheim Auto Auctions.

------------------------------------------- Coca Cola 600 Tidbits ------------------------------------------- Humpy Wheeler and Bruton Smith are well-known for some unique and interesting sideshows at Charlotter Motor Speedway. This past Coca Cola 600 was no exception.

The Grand Marshall is the traditional race starter who gets to exude the famous phrase of "gentlemen, start your engines" from a podium. However, for this race, those words were given some 180 miles out in space from the Space Shuttle Endeavor's crew via a special NASA downlink.

Also during the race weekend, title sponsor Coca Cola had a promotion that was a bomb. Literally speaking, they dropped some 600 empty 20 ounce plastic coke bottles complete with a parachute for a safe landing, which contained special coupons inside that were redeemable for NASCAR merchandise.

------------------------------------------- NEMCO Team Gets New GM ------------------------------------------- Joe Nemechek has recently hired Clyde Booth as general manager of NEMCO Motorsports. Booth was a former team manager for Darrell Waltrip's and Bill Davis' teams.

------------------------------------------- Buddy Parrott hospitalized ------------------------------------------- Buddy Parrott was hospitalized for chest pains over the weekend, and is under observation at this point. No more information has been available yet.

------------------------------------------- Silly Season already? ------------------------------------------- Silly Season rumors are already flyin' around the garage area. Here's a few:

John Andretti is apparently in hot water with Kranefuss/Haas and the #37 Kmart/Little Ceaser's team. Rumor has it that he may not last the rest of the season, if a suitable replacement can be found.

Ernie Irvan is the subject of some rumors as well. Reports say that he's not too happy with a two-car field, especially since Jarrett is doing so well. Other reports say that the close bond between Irvan and Yates may be fading away as well.

------------------------------------------- Problems with my Web Pages ------------------------------------------- I have exceeded my limit of free disk space on my Geocities homepage server, and as a result have experienced some problems updating certain pages. I am working on moving some of the information to other servers at this time, which should alleviate the problem. Sorry for any inconvience.

------------------------------------------- Happy Motoring :-) =Ken=
