Jimmie Johnson in the no. 48 Lowe'S Chevrolet qas the highest qualifying Raybestos® Rookie at Kansas.

"Just a little bit is all we needed but hat is off to Dale Jr. and that whole crew. That's a heck of a lap. I didn't know if I could get down into the threes there like he did where he ran a .350. It was great work from the Lowe's team. We went to Kentucky a couple of weeks ago and crashed and brought another car there Wednesday on our way to here. We've worked hard on it and we've got a great engine package. These guys have been working hard and it looks like we've got ourselves a top two or three starting spot."

ARE YOU DISAPPOINTED THAT YOU DIDN'T WIN THE POLE?

"I'm not disappointed. I'd love to have it but I went out there and gave it 100 percent. I feel like I hit all my marks and the team did everything they could. When you can give 100 percent and you get beat, not that you're happy about that, but you're okay with it then."

CHAD KNAUS, CREW CHIEF, NO. 48 LOWE'S CHEVROLET:

"We definitely had a shot at the pole. Jimmie did a really good job. I probably cost us the pole. I got on the radio and I told Jimmie to be real cautious getting into turn three. A lot of people were getting in there and they were pushing up the track pretty bad. A couple of guys almost crashed, so I probably made him a little apprehensive and he tip-toed through there a little bit. The car was real good. The Lowe's Chevrolet is running great. Jimmie is more focused than he's ever been and so are these guys. We're going to go out there every week and try to run as fast as we can. You're always disappointed if you don't get it (the pole) especially that close. For us to come out here, Jimmie's first time here in a Cup car and us never testing, I'm more than happy with that." -more- -2-

DID YOUR TEAM DO ANYTHING SPECIAL TO PREPARE FOR THIS RACE?

"We went to Kentucky and we ran one day two weeks ago and we actually crashed and we got this car prepared took it out there and stopped there on the way out here and shook the car down. That's about all we did."

RYAN NEWMAN, NO. 12 ALLTEL FORD, QUALIFIED THIRD

"I didn't have what Junior had, there's no doubt about that. Overall, it was a good run for the Alltel Ford. It isn't what we were looking for. We wanted to be a contender for the pole but that's all we had.

ARE YOU DISAPPOINTED YOU DIDN'T WIN THE POLE?

"We had a shot at the pole but it is hard beating those Chevrolets. It was a
good run for the Alltel Ford. I don't think I could have done much better.
I don't think the car could have been much faster. It's what we were today."

SELECTED JOHNSON PRESS CONFERENCE QUOTES

"It was a great lap for us. I thought we had a shot at the pole. When Dale Junior put that speed up early I knew it would be close but I didn't know if we could get there or not. The lap that I ran in practice to be first I didn't think there was anything left. Junior found some more and we made some small adjustments and squeezed a little more out of the Lowe's Monte Carlo. We were real close. I'm very proud of that lap. It's one thing if you lose the pole or lose something like that if you know you made a mistake. The team did everything they could and I did everything I could and we just came up second. I'm very proud of the effort we put forth."

WHY ARE THE SPEEDS SO FAST HERE TODAY?

"The track has had a season on it. Usually it would get slower, you would think. The track is in great shape. I think what's happening more than anything is that the cool air outside is letting the motors run better. You can fee a cool breeze blow through every once in a while and that really helps the horsepower of the engine. On top of that Goodyear brought a softer right side tire for us. The tire that the Cup cars ran with here last year was a little bit harder and didn't wear very well so from what I understand they brought a softer compound on the right side which should bring the speeds up. I think between those two is why we are seeing the fast speeds."
