"It was a good lap. We made a couple of adjustments on the car and we ran a little faster than what we had run in practice, so anytime that you do that you've got to be happy. It seems like it got a little hotter, so you've got to feel like the adjustments were good. I told them when I went to get in my car that I had nothing for what Dale, Jr. ran. I was just hoping we could get somewhere close to the other guys."

WHAT ABOUT A SECOND GROOVE? "I was really hoping when I got here that I'd see more of a second groove than what I see. Turns one and two seem to be a little bit wider than what three and four is right now. Hopefully, our good friends in the Busch Series will do something about that tomorrow as they get out and practice this afternoon and then have their race tomorrow."

ELLIOTT SADLER --21-- Motorcraft Taurus (Qualified 38th)

"I don't understand. The last two times I've run this car we're just gaining so much front heat and front tire buildups and everything, like something's broken in the front end, or bent, or maybe we've run this car so much it's starting to flex. Something's definitely wrong with the front of this car. We've changed 55 things today and run the same speed no matter what we change, so that's telling me something's broke somewhere. Maybe we'll find it for the race. Something happened to it last week and we're still having the same problems with it again this weekend."

JEFF BURTON --99-- Citgo Taurus (Qualified 15th)

"Today went great. I was really happy with today. We had one bad run and that was when we put our tires on it to go fast, but we knew why we had a bad run. I made a mistake, so we didn't post a good speed on the practice sheet. It looked like we were worse than we were. That's (the qualifying speed) was what I thought we would have run when I made my practice run, so today went really good. We made gains all day long. We got better and better almost every run. We've gone through a major change and everybody has responded to it really well. The crew members are just really open to Paul's ideas and Paul is open to their ideas and there's just a tremendous amount of information flying around the 99 right now -- to the point where I'm stepping away from it and letting them do it. I'm telling them what the car is doing and giving them my ideas, but I'm 100 percent letting them make the calls. That's what I hope to be able to do. Last week went really well and today went great. We could end up 25th and I would be happy, I really would. Today went great and I just hope we can carry it into tomorrow."

RUSTY WALLACE --2-- Miller Lite Taurus (Qualified 11th)

"I'm pretty happy with that. That's a .70 and we ran a .69 in practice. I really thought the track was a couple tenths slower for a lot of the guys and I didn't lose anything at all, so that's OK. That's a pretty good run. The car was real loose on fresh tires in practice, so we heat cycled my qualifying set and when I went to qualify they were all calmed down and everything was pretty good. I guess I could have charged it just a little bit harder if I knew how good the car was gonna be, but we're in good shape. We've got a solid qualifying run and we're ready for that Sunday race. Bring it on."

RICKY CRAVEN --32-- Tide Taurus (Qualified 20th)

"We were really challenged today. We were tight from the very get-go and we qualified tight -- extremely tight. I usually don't complain much, but I've got to tell you, I'd like to have the nose kicked out like the Chevrolets. It would go a long way in solving the problem we've got today."

MATT KENSETH --17-- DEWALT Power Tools Taurus (Qualified 27th)

"That's better than what we've been doing in practice. We've been struggling with our DEWALT Taurus all day. We just haven't been able to hit it, so it looks like that will get us somewhere between 25th and 30th, which is nothing to be excited about, but it's a lot better than we were in practice. We were definitely a provisional before we fixed it, so we made it a little better but we've got a long ways to go."

TODD BODINE --26-- Discover Card Taurus (Qualified 16th)

"We've been struggling all day. We can't get the car to drive off in the corner as good as we'd like and make it real comfortable and that's what you've got to have here. For qualfying, you've just got to hang it out. You've got to drive through it and do the best you can. That's by far the fastest lap we've run today, so we did it when it counted. The Discover Card Ford was right."

MARK MARTIN --6-- Viagra Taurus (Qualified 9th)

WHERE DID THE SPEED COME FROM BECAUSE IN PRACTICE YOU WERE DOWN ON THE CHART? "Ignorance. I drove like a young, dumb rookie I think because there's no way I should have made it around. I know I couldn't do it again, but I'm real happy with that. We've got a new car here and the car really didn't ever work that good for us. I feel like when we get in race setup we'll be able to get a chance to kind of get it worked out. I think we'll be good for Sunday and, lucky for us, we're gonna get a decent starting spot too."

WAS THE PRACTICE CHART INDICATIVE OF HOW YOU WERE? "Oh yeah, that's all we had and we didn't make any significant changes either. We just got a lap. That's why I'm so happy. That's all about a real special lap I got there. The car was not good, but I feel like once we get a chance to get it out and run some laps in race trim, we'll figure out what it is that it really needs and get it in there. It's a great, great day for us."

RICKY RUDD --28-- Havoline Taurus (Qualified 30th)

"We were 17th-fastest in practice. I really thought we'd be a little bit better than that, but the car pushed really bad. It's been pushing since we've been here and I can't get it turn, especially in turn one. I can't get the front end of the car to stick on the bottom and you can't run here if you're too tight. That's our problem."
