"It was good all day. We had a solid day. We had about an eighth or 12th-place car depending on what we'd do with the car chassis-wise. Donnie (crew chief Wingo) made a good call at the beginning of the last run. He told me to go ahead and save fuel in case we to green, and that's what happened. I'm proud of all the guys. They work hard all the time, and they deserved this. They don't deserve the finishes we've been having this year. They deserve better. I'm proud of today.
"It was a fuel mileage day. Fortunately Wingo made a real good call out of the pits. After that last pit stop he said run hard but save all the fuel you can. When we got in position to save fuel I did, and I was a little bit conservative right out of the gate. There at the end I was very conservative with about 30 to go. It's unfortunate we couldn't run up there and fight with Tony, but it was a great day for us. I'm happy. Obviously a second-place finish for this team is about like a win, especially after the streak of races we've had lately. They need it. The guys work very hard. They're the hardest working guys I've ever been around. They deserve a good finish, and it was their finish today. It was their call to stay out so I'm real proud of the Texaco guys.
"Tony is definitely good at fuel mileage. He's good at saving fuel. When a guy like that runs out you know you're probably pretty close. Honestly we haven't had the best fuel mileage this year. We've really been working hard to do the best job we can. Fortunately we came home with it today. We were lucky we started with lap one because we couldn't have afforded to run hard and make it to the end. Donnie said we'd be about a lap and a half short. We ended up about half a lap short, so I'm just real proud of his decision. We had a real good car all day. Not to take away from the performance of the car. I think we had a top 10 car. On top of that gambling gave us a good finish.
"Speed helps me. It's definitely a booster in morale with the team and myself. It's a positive note by every sense of the word, but at the same time, speed, driving to the front, winning races based on speed is what really satisfies me. I'm very satisfied today with the finish. I'm not taking anything away from it, but we've just got to get a little faster. I'm very proud of the decisions we made today and proud of the car we had today. It was a top 10 car, but we've got to focus more on getting inside the top five. I know we can do it. The tools are there. We've just got to keep working at it and get it right.
"I want to say the fact that Goodyear can make a tire that's durable and hold up with these cars is impressive. A 3,600-pound car putting the abuse we put on these things, but the tire was very hard today, a very tight tire. Everybody I talked to had to really loosen their cars up mechanically to get their cars turning. It made 'em real unstable. The only thing I echo with Mark is the track is an awesome racetrack. It's a lot of fun. It had multiple grooves today, which was huge. It looked like those last two seams at the top of the track they filled with some sort of tar was very slick and very inconsistent and if you hit it it really changed the balance of your car. That's what I almost got into a couple of times.
"I'll take a win any way I can get it. I'd be just as happy with it at the end of the day. I'm happy today, but I don't feel personally as rewarded as I would if I had driven to the front. I'll take 'em any way I can get 'em."
