Labonte Ready for Strong Run at Kansas
Team to run new car this weekend, still needs support
Mooresville, North Carolina, (Sept. 30, 2009) - Bobby Labonte will run a brand new No. 71 TRG Motorsports Chevrolet Impala SS at this weekend's Price Chopper 400 presented by Kraft Foods NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Kansas Speedway.
Team principal Kevin Buckler received a shiny new Chevrolet Impala SS that the TRG Motorsports team will run this weekend. This will be the first time that crew chief Richard "Slugger" Labbe will have an all updated car to race this season.
kansas adv "Kevin and the partners really stepped up," Labbe said. "Most of our cars are at least one year old. We've seen this season that the guys who run up front keep developing their cars. We just can't afford to keep up with that as a new team on a race-to-race budget. It will be fun to see what we can put under Bobby for this weekend with a brand new piece."
Labonte, who qualified eighth at New Hampshire with TRG, is looking forward to the weekend.
"Kansas is almost exactly the same as Chicago," Labonte said. "The grand stands, motor home parking lot, the garages, gas pumps and the layout is all the same. The only thing that is really different is the banking on the straights is a little different. We can't really take the exact same setup to Kansas, but your Chicago setup will get you pretty close. It is the same type of thought, but a little bit different. The bank angle is a little bit more and the track surface in Kansas is a lot smoother."
"We are running a newer car this race. Slugger and the guys are pretty excited about the car. So I think with that attitude going in it will be a good piece for us."
"Slugger and I have gotten on really well so far. A lot of it is a common sense approach. The bottom line is what makes the car go fast. The way that the team approaches the setup is really close to what I like. I am excited about that approach and it has worked for us so far. I have a good feeling about our relationship. We have a good idea of what it takes to run good and the TRG guys are all racers and that is what it takes to be successful on Sunday's."
Kevin Buckler, TRG Motorsports team principal, keeps working diligently to not only have the team racing this weekend, but in a brand new car.
"I have a great group of partners on this team," Buckler said. "Many of these guys are my buddies and their racing blood runs thick through everything we do in the Sprint Cup Series. We have some sponsors on the car that will allow us to race, but we need some more help for this weekend at Kansas. Hopefully with the new car, Bobby can put in another great qualifying effort to jump-start our weekend and push those potential sponsors over the hump with some more support. It is a very exciting time for us right now with all of the big advancements we are making. We are glad to be here."
