Kasey Kahne toured Atlanta Motor Speedway with the fastest lap in final practice. He charted a 187.856 mph, the only car to break the 187-mile mark. Kahne won the race here in the spring.
Kahne leads the circuit with six victories in 2006 and sits eighth in the NASCAR Nextel Cup Standings, 99 points behind leader Matt Kenseth.
"I'm really excited to be back at Atlanta," said Kahne. "We've got the same car we won the first race with here this season. This place is always a blast to come to. It's one of the funnest places every time we do. I don't know if we'll be able to qualify tonight. It's not looking good for that, but we'll definitely get some practice in tomorrow and be ready for Sunday's race."
Casey Mears was second quickest with a lap of 186.297 mph, "Atlanta is one of my favorite tracks on the circuit. I know I haven't finished well there in the past, but I love the speed of the track and the options you have as a driver. You carry so much speed that you're racing on the edge every lap. There are more grooves and lines around this track, so you can constantly search around and find which one works best for you and best for the car's handling."
Dale Earnhardt, Jr. was third with a lap of 186.240 mph.
"I like it because of the top groove and you can really move around on the race track. It is a really wide race track, and you can pretty much run anywhere in the corners," explained Earnhardt.
Joe Nemechek and Kurt Busch complete the top five.
Notably, point leader and pole sitter Matt Kenseth posted the 24th fastest time.
