Kasey Kahne turned the quickest lap in NASCAR Nextel Cup series qualifying at Michigan International Speedway. Kahne's lap of 185.644 mph just bested the second place car of Jeff Gordon.

"We will change a lot and do a lot tomorrow and hopefully get our UAW Dodge Dealers Chargers a lot better," said Kahne. "I was holding my breath when Jeff Gordon went out, that was a great lap. I just want to thank all my guys; they have been doing a great job."

It is Kahne's fourth pole of the 2006 season.

Gordon posted a lap of 185.543 mph, "It's a compromise with the set up today with this wind. You are a little bit loose in 1 and 2 and tight in 3 and 4. We tightened the car up for 1 and 2 and it got through there awesome. I kept telling myself on the back straightaway not to overdrive it. I didn't and I got in there good but you just need to use a little more brake to turn a little earlier. I knew that's where it cost me and I knew it was going to be close."

Brian Vickers, Jimmie Johnson and Bobby Labonte complete the top five.

"That was a good run for us," said Johnson. "It's great to see the Hendrick cars starting 2, 3, and 5 - we should be good this weekend."

Notably, Ryan Newman crashed on his qualifying lap and will have to start 42nd and Bill Lester making his second Cup start placed on time in the 34th spot.

Forty seven cars attempted to qualify for the forty three car field. Failing to make the show were Mike Garvey, Chad Chaffin, Jimmy Spencer and Carl Long.
