Jones continues to test at Richmond Shawn A. Akers
RICHMOND, VA (August 19, 1998) Buckshot Jones, driver of the No. 00 Stavola Brothers Chevrolet in the NASCAR Winston Cup Series, continued with the second day of a three-day test at Richmond International Raceway Wednesday for the upcoming Exide NASCAR Select Batteries 400 at the .750-mile oval, with assistance from veteran Lake Speed. A NASCAR Busch Series Grand National Division regular, Jones, who is expected to move up to the NASCAR Winston Cup Series in 1999, failed to qualify for the Pontiac Excitement 400 in June at Richmond after a top-10 performance the week before at Dover, Del. On Wednesday, he began the session with a fast lap of 22.200 seconds. The track Bud Pole Qualifying record is 21.642 seconds, or 124.757 mph, set in 1995 by Jeff Gordon for the Pontiac Excitement 400. "Right now, we're just trying to get comfortable with the car here," Jones said. "The Busch cars are a lot different from the Cup cars, and we're making a lot of adjustments. We just want to get comfortable during the test so we can have an idea of what we're up against when we come back for the race." Speed, former driver of the No. 9 Cartoon Network Ford, was at RIR on Wednesday in an "advisory capacity" to Jones. "Buckshot's not real familiar with that race track, and Lake was available to go up and give him some pointers," said Stavola Brothers Team Controller Donnie Johnson. "Lake was only too happy to do it, especially since he's got about a million miles on that track. We've seen some very positive results from Buckshot lately, and Lake said he wouldn't mind giving the boy some advice about Richmond." The Exide NASCAR Select Batteries 400 at Richmond is scheduled for Saturday night, Sept. 12. Jones has the Richmond track booked again for Thursday. RIR testing continues next week beginning on Monday for NASCAR Winston Cup Series and NASCAR Busch Series teams, with Dale Jarrett, Kenny Irwin and Elton Sawyer among those drivers expected during the week. Richmond's three-night September NASCAR weekend begins with the Thursday, Sept. 10 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series Virginia Is For Lovers 200, and continues Friday night, Sept. 11, with the NASCAR Busch Series Autolite Platinum 250. Tickets for both races are available at the RIR ticket office by calling (804) 345-7223. Children ages 12 and younger are admitted free to grandstands at both the NASCAR Craftsman Truck and NASCAR Busch Series races when accompanied by a ticket purchaser. RIR's 1998 racing schedule concludes on Saturday night, Sept. 12, with the sold-out Exide NASCAR Select Batteries 400. Grandstands are open to fans at no charge during all RIR testing.
