JOHN ANDRETTI (No. 43 Cheerios Dodge Intrepid R/T)

"It's a difficult race track because it's like Darlington. You get one corner good and the other corner wrong. I've tested a lot here with Indy cars. The Petty team has always been strong on flat tracks, and I like the flat tracks, too. The track is real slippery, especially with this tire compound. I'm more disappointed about Kyle not being on the pole than I am about me being second. I don't mind being second if Kyle was first.

"A pole would have been nice for a lot of reasons. I think this has been a very difficult season. With 43 guys out there every weekend, you guys can only talk about so much. Our team has sort of been in hiding the whole year. Kyle has put a lot of effort into this and the Petty team has put a lot of money and energy into it. I think they deserve some recognition for that, and a pole would have helped us help you give us that, but second is a step forward. The last couple of weeks, the Petty cars have qualified for the races solidly, and that's a big step forward. This is still the same engine program we've had all year.

"My guys on the team keep my spirits up. My car was not the thing that I loved the most in this world at the end of practice. I key the mike and tell them what I'm thinking, but it's not directed at them. I think they're such a great group of guys, they keep me going. The 43 team is a team that I really believe in. The group of guys I have is really an excellent group. I think when we get all the parts and pieces together they gave us, the equipment and things behind us like Kyle is trying to do, we should be coming. Until we do that, we can talk about getting better, but it's hard to do.

"I think this year our qualifying has been horrible. The first part of the year it was terrible. I struggled in qualifying. The rest of the cars on our team struggled in qualifying. We just got a grip on what we needed to do with the cars, the engines are better, the cars are better and we're figuring out the tires. All that stuff helps. We've had real good cars in the races. We just haven't qualified well and then got torn up or blown up early or something. I hope we don't get torn up this time going into turn one."
