WHAT ABOUT YOUR SUCCESS HERE?
"We tested up here with the Cup car. I was just in here an hour ago telling you how bad it was and we put the car right back to where we tested and right back to yesterday's setup. We started chasing the race track and found out it was the wrong thing to do. We put it right back where we were. I made a little mistake going into the third turn. I really felt like I could run in the twenties, but, oh well, that's life."
WHAT ABOUT TODD ON THE POLE?
"I think it's great. We're up here in Chicago. Carl Haas lives less than an hour away. He's up racing the Indy cars in Vancouver. I think it's special for Travis and him. It's not a win by any means, but it shows all the hard work they've put into the team and the money they've been spending. Wind tunnel data and stuff like that has been paying off. I think it's a tribute to my race team for never giving up. We help the 66 a bunch, so if you're getting beat by anybody you'd rather see your teammate beat you for the pole rather than somebody else. I think it's pretty neat for Travis and Carl more than anybody. All the hard work has paid off for them."
ANYTHING ABOUT THIS TRACK THAT SUITS YOUR CARS?
"No, I don't think it's our two cars. I felt good when Mark Martin qualified and said, 'I wish I went back to where I was yesterday.' I said, 'Man Mark, I'm glad to hear you say that,' because that's where we went -- back to where we were. I think this race track, Darrell Waltrip says it best, you can very easily overdrive. California, Michigan, this is becoming one of those race tracks. You can very easily catch yourself trying to go in the corners deeper. The car will hold it, but the car is slower. I was doing that a little bit this morning and that helped me a lot. I'd have to say that our cars are actually two different cars. I'm a big Mike Loughlin fan and I think Todd has a Hopkins car here. I think that he has four different shocks than what I have on, but I think the Robert Yates engines are good and that helps us a lot. You always know you have a little bit of power left when you go to qualify. So, to say that there's a big advantage for the Kmart cars, I don't think there is. We've just got some Fords and, hopefully, we can get them handling good for the race trim and run up front all day."
WITH THE DALE, JR. SITUATION, DO YOU FEEL YOU'RE UNDER MORE PRESSURE THIS WEEKEND?
"No. I said some stuff last week when I left the race track. It was two years of frustration for me. I've run like crap on the restrictor plate races the last two years and I love them. I have not run well at all. What I meant was the 8 car was really good Friday night. It was a really good car and the way I said it, it just came out wrong. I said I was sorry for it. I don't believe NASCAR has got anybody that's cheating. If they are they would fire them. If they'd catch them, they'd probably put them in jail if they could, so, to me, there's too many people that the cars have to go through in the process. You can't get two people to agree on something let alone 14 or 18 officials, so I don't believe they are cheating at all."
