Jeff Gordon waited out a brief rain shower, to score his second pole of the season with a lap of 127.597 mph at Bristol Motor Speedway. Gordon went out previous to the storm that interrupted time trials at the mid-point, but was nervous that his lap would not hold up once the session resumed.

"The whole day has been really great for us, but I didn't think that was my best lap," Gordon said. "I thought for sure somebody would beat us. With the rain, I thought that the track would be a little faster."

Mark Martin came close.

Martin took his lap after the storm, and came within .001 second of Gordon's time.

"It's a starting spot and it sure beats starting in the back and the pit selection is horrendous," he said. "Just because we start up front doesn't mean we're going to avoid a nightmare."

Michael Waltrip and Mike Skinner share row two, Kurt Busch rounds out the top five.

Busch, who was the recipient of a sucker punch from Jimmy Spencer post race at Michigan last week, starts directly in front of the No. 7 Dodge usually piloted by Spencer. A one-race suspension, however, avoids that ugly situation - Ted Musgrave is driving for the punished Spencer.

Championship front-runners Dale Earnhardt, Jr. and Matt Kenseth start 9th and 10th.
