Leffler Finishes 41st In Checker Auto Parts 500
PHOENIX, Ariz. (October 28, 2001)– The No. 01 Cingular Wireless Dodge R/T driven by rookie driver Jason Leffler finished 41st in the Checker Auto Parts 500 at Phoenix International Raceway. Leffler is 37th in NASCAR Winston Cup Championship points standings; he is 35 points out of 36th place.
The Cingular Wireless Dodge started the 312-lap event in 36th position. On lap 5, Leffler radioed in and said that the car felt like it was running on seven cylinders. The No. 01 Dodge dropped to 42nd position by lap 30.
During the first caution period of the day (lap 33), Leffler brought the car in for four tires and fuel. The team opted to come in again during the caution to attempt to fix the problem while going a lap down in the process.
On lap 108, the No. 01 Cingular Wireless Dodge went into the garage and the team changed spark plugs to fix the problem. The No. 01 Dodge went back out on lap 141 in 42nd place.
The Cingular Wireless Dodge continued to have problems during the remainder of the race. On lap 289, Leffler steered the car into the garage to end the day early with a 41st place finish. Leffler remains in fifth place in Raybestos Rookie of the Year points.
“ We had some problem with the spark plugs so we came in and changed them,” said Matt Chambers, crew chief of the No. 01 Cingular Wireless Dodge. “ We were running pretty good after that but I think we might have damaged the motor running around on seven cylinders.”
Next on the schedule for the No. 01 Cingular Wireless team is the Pop Secret Microwave Popcorn 400 at North Carolina Speedway on Sunday, Nov. 4.
