"We needed it. We weren't that good. We kind of tried some 2005 stuff -- threw some stuff at the car and were kind of hoping for qualifying. But it was pretty good. Let's hope it heats up a little and slows some of the other guys down."
AFTER YOUR LAP, YOU HAD A CHANCE TO WATCH YOUR QUALIFYING EFFORT ON VIDEO. WHAT WERE YOU LOOKING FOR? "Looking at how the car looks on the race track, how down it was, and I was also looking at my line from on TV, and the line was awesome. I drove a great lap race track-wise by being where I needed to be -- three inches from the wall and turned down right across the white line. So, it looked like a good lap, but didn't have a lot of confidence in the car so I think I could've been a little bit better but was just being cautious."
CARL EDWARDS -- No. 99 Office Depot Fusion (qualified 22nd)
"The track is great. Just hopefully it gets slower and slower as it goes because we missed it. We were too tight, and I think that maybe the heat building up will keep the other folks from going much faster. We were lucky that we had an early draw because that would've been an ugly lap 30 or 40 minutes from now."
KEN SCHRADER -- No. 21 Little Debbie Fusion (qualified 11th)
"We wanted more, but also, being realistic, we need a good solid start in this thing, it would be wonderful. And that's going to get us solid somewhere. When you get closer to the front, you want to be right there, and we were three-tenths off yesterday and I think that's about what we are again. So, we'll just keep digging, worry about racing now."
WHY JUST ONE LAP? "The tires are better the first lap. We're running so much tape on 'em for less drag and more downforce that the engines can't go two laps. We knew that's what everybody was going to do today."
THIS IS THE POCONO CAR AND NOT THE CAR YOU TESTED, CORRECT? "Yeah, but we think that aerodynamically it's a little better car, got a little better balance to it. Fatback (McSwain, crew chief) wanted to bring it."
IT'S BEEN A GOOD WEEKEND SO FAR... "It's been good and solid. It's going to be a good starting spot."
ELLIOTT SADLER -- No. 38 Snickers Fusion (qualified 27th)
"This might be early enough to get us in the top 25, top 30, hopefully. We've had a long weekend, we're struggling a little bit -- not from not working good together, I really like working with Cully (Barraclaugh, crew chief), and got a cool paint scheme this week. It's the first time since 1992 that Snickers has been the primary, so we want to really run good. Indy is special to a lot of folks. We just hadn't hit it yet, we're going to keep trying. We've got two more hours to do it and my guys are working hard on it, so we'll see what we got."
JAMIE McMURRAY -- No. 26 Crown Royal Fusion (qualified 18th)
"We picked up quite a bit from practice and we did race-trim stuff yesterday and felt pretty good about it. And when we did our qualifying runs we didn't get a very good read on our car. So, Bob (Osborne, crew chief) made some really good adjustments here this morning. The car drove really well, I just didn't drive as hard as what probably what the car was capable of. We were so tight in practice that I just wanted to make sure I got a good lap in. And then after I ran my lap I realized I could go quite a bit quicker."
EVERYBODY SAYS THAT GETTING AN EARLY DRAW IS A BIG ADVANTAGE. YOU WENT OUT TOWARD THE MIDDLE. WHAT IS YOUR SENSE OF THE TRACK RIGHT NOW? "I would say certainly the first 10 guys probably had a little bit of an advantage over the last 10, so just everyone that goes out from the first guy to the end will just slow down a little bit."
BORIS SAID -- No. 60 SoBe No Fear Ford Fusion (qualified 37th)
"It's so nerve-wracking. When you're not in the top 35 in points it's just so hard to get it done in one lap. Yesterday, I put the team behind. I hit the wall twice and didn't get a lot of practice, but that was our best lap of the weekend and the best lap I've run since we tested here. Now we've just got this nerve-wracking wait to see what everyone else does. Hopefully, it will get good and hot and slippery (laughing)."
MATT KENSETH -- No. 17 DeWalt Ford Fusion (qualified 20th)
"My lap was probably just too conservative. This place is real sensitive to hitting the corners just right and the only corner I really hit right was number two, so the rest of them I just didn't get them like I needed to."
MARK MARTIN -- No. 6 AAA Ford Fusion (qualified 19th)
"We were so close to having a good run there. It was almost frustrating because it was right there at my fingertips. I just couldn't keep the back end tucked up under it. I was able to maintain a good momentum, but I wasn't able to blast off the corners. It's frustrating. It was nothing like a pole run, but it could have been a top 10 or 12 run for us with just a little bit of help."
SO YOU FEEL YOU'VE GOT SOMETHING TO WORK WITH IN THE NEXT TWO PRACTICES? "We need that. We weren't happy yesterday until the very end of qualifying practice and then we made it feel a lot better. That has great potential, so I feel like we may get back what we had in the test. We were real happy in the test."
STEPHEN LEICHT -- No. 90 CitiFinancial Ford Fusion (qualified 48th)
"We ran a lot better in practice. I don't understand where the speed went. I know know if I took it too easy or what. I was trying to not overdrive the corner and get in the gas early. It felt like a good lap, but there was just no speed in it, I guess."
DID THE TRACK FEEL DIFFERENT? "No. We had a lot more tape on it today than we did yesterday, so it was definitely freer, but I don't know. I don't know where the speed went. I guess I was just too easy with it."
