BRICKYARD 400 SCHEDULE SET FOR 1997 RACE
INDIANAPOLIS, June 12, 1997 -- The fourth Brickyard 400 NASCAR Winston Cup stock car race at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, which has been sold out since last August, will once again take place over four days.
The 160-lap, 400-mile race on the historic 2.5 mile Speedway race track will be run on Saturday, August 2, beginning at 12:15 p.m. local time (CDT), and will be telecast live by ABC Sports. The IMS Radio Network will also be carried live on several hundred stations.
Practice begins Wednesday, July 30, from 1-5 p.m. Thursday is Busch Pole qualifying (one lap) for starting sports 1-25 at 1:30 p.m. after a two-hour morning practice from 9:30 - 11:30 a.m. Friday practice is 10 - 11:30 a.m. with second-round qualifying for positions 26- 38 (positions 39-42 are provisional) at 1:30 p.m., followed by NASCAR's one-hour final practice.
Inaugural Brickyard 400 winner Jeff Gordon sat on the Busch Pole in 1995 and again in 1996, shattering his own track record last year with a speed of 176.419 miles per hour. Dale Earnhardt, the holder of seven Winston Cup championships, won the second Brickyard 400 in 1995. The 1996 Brickyard race was won by Dale Jarrett, who passed Ernie Irvan on Lap 154 in Turn 2. Jarrett held on to lead the final laps of the race and won the third Brickyard 400 under yellow after Robert Pressley hit the wall in Turn 4 on Lap 159. Jarrett, in the Quality Care/Ford Credit Ford, took home the winner's share of $564,035 from the total Brickyard purse of $4,695,547.=20
All reserved seats for the 1997 Brickyard 400 are sold out, and general admission tickets are not available on race day. General admission tickets are available on practice ($5 per person over 5 years of age) and qualifying days ($10 per person over 5 years) is by general admission only. A $25 three-day (Wednesday-Friday) practice and qualifying pass allows daily in-and-out privileges and is available through the IMS ticket office only. Single day gate admissions, sold at the gate, do not provide exit and return to the track.
