2010 BRICKYARD 400 START TIME MOVED TO 1 P.M.
Earlier green flag to benefit fans
INDIANAPOLIS, Wednesday, Oct. 7, 2009 -- The start time for the 2010 Brickyard 400 has been moved to 1 p.m. (ET) Sunday, July 25 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway as part of NASCAR's initiative to create earlier, uniform start times for NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races.
It will be the earliest green flag for the race since 2000, when it began at 12:15 p.m. Brickyard 400 race start times have ranged from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. since 2001, with the race starting at 2 p.m. the last three years.
"We're pleased about the new start time for the Brickyard 400," said Jeff Belskus, president and chief executive officer of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Corporation. "A 1 p.m. green flag gives us more flexibility to complete the race that day in case of inclement weather, and it also provides more daylight travel time for our fans driving home longer distances from the race."
The Brickyard 400 is one of 28 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series events with an earlier green flag in 2010. Races in the Eastern and Central time zones will start at 1 p.m. (ET), with West Coast races beginning at 3 p.m. (ET) and nearly all night races at 7:30 p.m. (ET).
NASCAR worked closely with tracks and television partners FOX, Turner and ESPN/ABC on this project. ESPN will continue to televise the Brickyard 400 live in 2010.
"NASCAR fans have been asking for earlier and more consistent start times, and we are making this change for our fans, beginning with the Daytona 500 next February," NASCAR Chairman and CEO Brian France said. "We are revisiting our sport's tradition of earlier green flags, and the added consistency will make it easier for fans to know exactly when the races are being televised. Additionally, the new start times will help track operators get fans in and out of the track earlier in the evening. Many fans heading home from the race earlier will be able to eliminate the costs of an extra travel day."
