HOMESTEAD, Fla. (Sept. 22, 1998) - The inaugural Jiffy Lube Miami 400 on Nov. 14, 1999, the first NASCAR Winston Cup Series race to be held at the Miami-Dade Homestead Motorsports Complex, will also be the first NASCAR race to be televised live by NBC Sports.
NBC Sports and Homestead Miami Speedway announced a three-year contract to broadcast both the Saturday NASCAR Busch Series season finale, and the Sunday Jiffy Lube Miami 400 NASCAR Winston Cup Series race.
"NBC Sports has set the standard in broadcasting sporting events, ranging from the Olympics to the National Basketball Association and Major League Baseball," said Brian Skuza, President of Homestead Miami Speedway LLC. "As we begin our first venture into NASCAR Winston Cup racing, we welcome NBC Sports and look forward to a long and prosperous partnership.
"We are extremely pleased to begin our relationship with NASCAR," said Ken Schanzer, President of NBC Sports. "NASCAR is the most recognizable brand in motor sports, and its racing is one of the most popular and fastest growing sports in the country. There couldn't be a better event to get us started. The speedway is state-of-the-art, the Miami market is excited about the event, and everyone at Homestead Miami Speedway and NASCAR has embraced our involvement."
Though NBC Sports has previously telecast motorsports events, this will be its first live coverage of a NASCAR event. The Jiffy Lube Miami 400 will be the next-to-the-last race on the 34-event NASCAR Winston Cup Series, and is the only event added to the 1999 schedule. Since 1995, when the Miami-Dade Homestead Motorsports Complex was built, the speedway has hosted the final NASCAR Busch Series race of the season. Broadcast times and announcers will be announced in the near future.
The Miami-Dade Homestead Motorsports Complex is a state-of-the-art 344-acre facility located in the Homestead area of the vibrant South Florida market. Other annual events at the speedway include the Marlboro Grand Prix of Miami presented by Toyota for the CART FedEx Championship Series, the Florida Dodge Dealers 400 for the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series, and major sports car events on the 2.21- mile road circuit.
