HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THAT RUN? "That wasn't the prettiest lap out here today, but, we had a good lap. We've got a really good car. We're normally 'bad to the bone' on Sunday here. Our car is really, really good in race trim, so I'm pretty excited about Sunday now."
ON TESTING HERE A COUPLE WEEKS AGO: "Everybody always says, with as good as we run down here, why do we come down and test like that - take one of our seven tests and use it here at a place like this. It's to try to stay good here and to try to keep an advantage on these guys. So, we took that last test and burned it up and the car was really good in race trim. We only made four qualifying runs. We didn't do any work in qualifying trim, really. Our first four runs of the day were qualifying runs and then we went strictly to race setups. We had a lot more fun in race trim than we did in qualifying trim."
IS THIS A TRACK WHERE YOU HAVE TO USE THE THROTTLE A LOT?: "You have to use everything here, so it's perfect for me. It's really dependent on handling, more than anything, here, so you can have the most horsepower in the world or whatever and still not win this race. It's whoever gets their car driving the best and who does the best job of saving the tires all day."
KEN SCHRADER, NO. 36 M&M'S PONTIAC GRAND PRIX:
"That's not stellar, but it's better. We made a couple key changes and it got better and that is what we needed."
MIKE WALLACE, NO. 14 CONSECO PONTIAC GRAND PRIX:
"We were out of provisionals and we weren't good in practice. We were 38th in practice. But, that's what's good about [crew chief] Mike Hillman is that he is always so damn calm. He said, 'Don't worry - I'll get you tuned up.' I guess I got out there about 10 cars before the car did and I was watching other guys run down (into turn one), and I didn't think I had been driving that deep down into the corner. So, I said, 'Well, I'm going to drive it down there and it's going to come back with a good lap or it's not going to come back - one of the two.' But, the car was good and that is a real, respectable showing for us. That is probably the best we've ever qualified with this car.
"It's a tribute to all the guys. They do a good job week in, week out. I've been the weak link, I'm sure, when it comes to qualifying. But, they stood behind me and now they can race on Sunday. That's all we were worried about."
