88 - Dale Jarrett - Quality Care Service/Ford Credit Taurus -- (finished 5th - 1999 Winston Cup Champion) "I want to start out by thanking God for all of the talents on this race team and for giving me the opportunity to work with these people. Robert and Doug Yates, Carolyn (Yates), Todd Parrott, this entire group. You know this all wouldn't have been possible without two guys that were with Robert Yates before. We'd be remiss if we didn't thank Davey Allison for starting this whole thing and getting it to a championship level, and Ernie Irvan coming in and doing his part, being a great friend and a great teammate. I'd like to thank my family. It's just an awesome feeling. It's just fantastic." IS THE REALITY AS GOOD AS THE DREAM AND THE FANTASY? "It's much better. This is just incredible to think that we're the best race team for a year. It's unbelievable. It's almost hard to put into words what I feel for these guys, how much I love them, the job that they've done week in and week out." WHAT DOES THIS MEAN TO THE JARRETT FAMILY? "This sport has been awful good to the Jarrett family over the years. To now become the second father-son team to win a Winston Cup Championship is pretty special to us. Hopefully we've given a little something back to the sport. The fans have just been fantastic to us. This is just an incredible feeling, a great day for the Jarrett family. I just hope that there is more to come. I want to thank all the fans for their support. I certainly congratulate Tony Stewart. What an awesome job he's done all year long. It's just unbelievable man. This is what it's all about. Those days and nights of working non-stop, and not being able to see the things that my kids were doing. It's all paid off."
Robert Yates - Owner, Quality Care Service/ Ford Credit Taurus -- "They quit counting, right. They finished. This is the last frame. Boy, it's hard to stay up front there. You know, chasing is sometimes a lot more fun. You can be a little more risky, but when you are trying to protect the lead and make all those decisions week after week. We knew we had to have zero defects and we got it done."
Todd Parrott - Crew Chief, Quality Care Service/Ford Credit Taurus -- "It takes a total team effort, no doubt. We've got a team that just never gives up. That's what got us the championship this year. There were many races that we were down, many races that we were almost a lap down, but we fought back. Phoenix was just a prime example of what we're made of. We were down a lap, running 26th and it could have made this thing a lot harder. But we fought back. The pit crew fought back, and we had great pit stops. We ended up sixth, and that's what it takes to get that right there (pointing to the Winston Cup trophy).
JEFF BURTON --99-- Exide Batteries Taurus (Finished 3rd) -- "We had a good race car, we were real good on long runs. I don't want to sound like a whiner, but there ain't no way you can beat them Pontiacs. They gave 'em a lot of spoiler and a lot of air dam for a long time and they started building real nice bodies, and on top of that, they're doing a great job. They've got good springs and good shocks and they're doing a great job driving 'em. On top of that they've got a lot of downforce, so it's difficult to beat 'em. We finished first in class, so I guess that's OK." AS FAR AS RACE STRATEGY YOU TOOK ONLY GAS, WAS THAT BECAUSE YOU FELT IT WAS YOUR BEST CHANCE TO WIN? "That was all Frank (Stoddard). Frank made that call, but that was the right thing to do. There was no way we ever would have ever beaten them unless we did something different than them. There was no way we could do it, they were just faster than we were. I was better than the 18 on a real long run, but he was gonna put on tires and I was gonna put on tires so he was gonna be better than me again. So we had to do something different, it was the right call."
JEREMY MAYFIELD --12-- Mobil 1 Taurus (Finished 13th) -- "We had a great car. I got caught speeding down pit road and one time we didn't get enough gas in it. We had to pit early, so that put us off sync with everybody and it was just one of those things. It was a good day all in all, we were just better than that. We had a better car than what we finished."
RUSTY WALLACE --2-- Miller Lite Taurus (Finished 12th) -- "First of all I'd like to congratulate Dale Jarrett because he did a hell of a job. They did everything they needed to do, they drove it wide-open until the end and won it. Congratulations to those two Pontiac drivers that checked out and dominated and blew everybody in the whole entire field off by half a lap...a good job on their part. As far as we went, we kept looking at the times all day long and the 88 car, the 6 car and my car I was within a half-tenth of them all day long, but I was so loose at the beginning of the race that I lost so much track position and we kept running green that it got me way behind and I got lapped. But once we got the caution, I was pretty happy. I was pretty stable and I held my own. I thought I was gonna finish ninth and Bodine got me there, there were two cars that we didn't count on made it on fuel and stayed out, so that put us to 12th. That's OK, I just want to maintain my eighth position right now. I've got one more shot to win a race and we'll see if we can do it."
MARK MARTIN --6-- Valvoline/Cummins Taurus (Finished 4th) -- "We had a real good setup under the car and late in the race there we got the car a little bit too tight. I probably overreacted a little bit early in the race. I was trying to get set up to win the race. We were a third place car, a fourth place car, and we tried a little bit harder. Maybe we should have sat where we were, but it was gonna take a change to get us in position to contend to win and we made those changes and it hurt us a little." WHAT WAS YOUR REACTION TO RACING A CUP CAR HERE FOR THE FIRST TIME? "I thought it was great, it's a great race track." IS IT HARD TO PASS OUT THERE? IS THAT A CHARACTERISTIC OF FLAT RACE TRACKS? "I don't know, I passed everybody I caught. I don't know. I love it, it's a great track."
