David Gilliland Solid at Homestead -- Qualifies the Farm Bureau Insurance Toyota 17th
Homestead, FL -- David Gilliland, driver of the No. 02 Farm Bureau Insurance Toyota in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series for Joe Gibbs Racing, qualified 17th this afternoon for Sunday's FORD 400 from Homestead Miami Speedway.
The Joe Gibbs Racing team had over an hour this morning to get the Farm Bureau Insurance Toyota ready for its two fastest laps in Coors Pole Qualifying. They would need every bit of that practice, as David came over the radio after his first few laps during practice, stating that his Toyota was loose in and tight center off the turn.
"There's just never enough time in the practice sessions. The Farm Bureau Insurance Toyota was loose driving into the turns but that part I can stand - it's the tight center and driving off the corners that really affects our lap. However, we made a lot of adjustments throughout that practice, so I know that final speed want indicate what kind of lap the Farm Bureau Insurance Toyota will put down," said David Gilliland after the Sprint Cup Practice this morning.
David's confidence in the Farm Bureau Insurance Toyota and Joe Gibbs Racing team was demonstrated on his qualifying lap, as he went out and posted a lap fast enough to immediately lock himself into the field for Sunday's race.
"I'm really proud of Wally (Brown) and all the guys on this team. The Farm Bureau Insurance Toyota drove really well. We've struggled in practice but the guys made some great changes for qualifying and every time we're able to put down a solid lap and get into the race. We're always in a different situation than other teams. Our first priority is to qualify into the race or we won't be around on Sunday and that wouldn't be good for me, the team or Farm Bureau Insurance. So, that's our first and foremost goal, so I'm real proud of what we've been able to do. We went back to review our notes on things we've learned in the first two races and those things helped. I'm real proud of all of the guys and I hope Farm Bureau Insurance is pleased as well," said a happy David Gilliland after his qualifying lap.
David has qualified for all three races for Farm Bureau Insurance and Joe Gibbs Racing, including 14th at Texas Motor Speedway. Sunday's race will be the last for both David Gilliland and Farm Bureau Insurance in 2009.
