Hillin released from ride

MOORESVILLE, N.C. (May 24, 1997) Jasper Motorsports announced Saturday that they have released Bobby Hillin Jr as the driver for the No. 77 Jasper Engines/Federal-Mogul Ford. The decision was made after the team failed to qualify for the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway. It is the third NASCAR Winston Cup Series event that Hillin has failed to qualify for this season. "We've been struggling all season," explained Doug Bawel, owner of Jasper Motorsports. "We need to step up our operation. We just haven't found the right combination to make that happen." Bawel and Hillin have been friends for several years and Bawel says it was not an easy decision to make. "He is not only a personal friend, but an excellent man of character and commitment," Bawel said. "I'm not happy running at the back of the pack and neither is Bobby. It was time to make a change, turn things around and start looking ahead to next year and the future of our team." Hillin will continue to drive the car until a suitable replacement can be found. He assumed the driving duties of the No. 77 Thunderbird 10 races into the 1995 season replacing Davey Jones. Hillin is a minority owner in Jasper Motorsports.
