RUMBLINGS FOR POCONO
Robert Yates isn't the only guy having to make the tough decisions....Todd Parrott had a hard one to make, and made the right one today. When two of the Roush teams (Ted Musgrave & Jeff Burton) took only 2 tires on their last stop, you know he had to be tempted. But he made the right call (4 tires) and Dale Jarrett (who was much the best today) was on the road to career victory #11....8 of those for Robert Yates Racing. The win was DJ's third of the season, and gives him sole possession of 41st place on the all-time win list.
Parrott's numbers are pretty impressive as well. He's now won 7 of 49 races as a crew-chief (14.3%). Of course, that guy who's the crew chief for the points leader (and todays runner-up) isn't too shabby either. Ray Evernham has 26 wins in 142 starts (18.3%)
Of course, IMO, the CC's for both the #99 and the #16 made the best calls they could for their interests. It was obvious that all things being equal, the #88 could outrun them, so they made the only decision that could result in victory. But, with 35 or so laps to go, those 4 tires won out. And, Jack Roush shouldn't hang his head....3rd, 4th, & 5th is not too shabby.
Mike Skinner had a career best 6th place finish today.
Terry Labonte can't blame his poor finish on an in-car camera today, but he may be calling his brother tonight (G). I think today's altercation gives a whole new meaning to those old Chevy commercials.
Rusty Wallace's season of discontent continues. Today was DNF #8....he had 6 all of last year.
Derrike Cope led a lap today for the first time this season. The last race in which cope was a leader was at "The Rock" last October. There have now been 38 different drivers to score bonus points this season, compared with 45 in 1996.
The UNOCAL Bonus money will be worth $60,800 at Indy....the Winston Leader Bonus will be worth $40K should the points leader win in 2 weeks.
STREAKIN....Dale Jarrett has 5 Top-10's in the last 6 races. Jeff Burton has 3 Top-10's in a row. Mark Martin has 11 Top-10's in the last 12 races, and 10 Top-5's in those same 12 races.
This week's elevator....UP: Operator of the week is Johnny Benson (+27), Kyle Petty (+26), and Geoff Bodine (+21). DOWN: The Big Dropper is Ernie Irvan (-38), Wally Dallenbach (-35), Jeff Green (-23), and Joe Nemechek (-20).
Jeff Gordon was the major beneficiary of Terry Labonte's troubles today. He reassumes the point lead, with Mark Martin moving up to 2nd. Texas Terry slips to 3rd, going from a 3-point lead to a deficit of 114 markers. Jimmy Spencer's fine run moved him up 3 positions (20th to 17th), while both Rusty Wallace (11th to 14th) and Sterling Marlin (17th to 20th) fell 3 spots.
Next week's off, then get ready for a busy time at Indy. There are a bushel basket full of major announcements expected....from manufacturers, drivers, sponsors, and owners. We should have the largest turnout of cars since the season opener at Daytona. Oh, and somewhere in there, we'll hit the Bricks and race just a little (G).
