RAMBLINGS -- ROCKINGHAM
Bobby Labonte grabs his 3rd pole of the season today, tying him with Mark Martin & Dale Jarrett for the most top-starting spots this season. DJ has really only won 2 poles this year, but got the pole award at the first Pocono event when Bobby Hamilton (who doesn't run the decal) had the fastest qualifying time. If you don't think that's important, then $30K is chump-change (G). That's the prize for winning the most Busch Poles (plus $10K for the crew chief). In case of a tie, it's broken by the most outside poles....and here's how that stands:
Mark Martin - 3 Dale Jarrett - 2 (including today) Bobby Labonte - 2
With only 2 more races left, the cash is still up for grabs.
Clyde Bolton (maybe the best chronicler of the Alabam Gang in general, and Davey Allison in particular) of the Birmingham News, had a great story on how this year's points race would look right now if Davey were still with us. It's worth a read...the url is: www.al.com/sports/motorsports/1997-10-22/bolton.allison.bn.html.
Hey, if NASCAR is thinking of abandoning the short tracks with the WC Series, they oughta watch a replay of last weekends All-Pro race from Nashville. That may have been the best race of the year in any series. Watch the listings for a replay from TNN, and make sure you've got your VCR's running....the last 50 laps are a keeper.
I'm constantly amazed at how we can time down to 1000th's of a second, and still get a tie. I've seen a few rundowns on various sites today that list Wally Dallenbach ahead of Johnny Benson with identical times of 23.621 seconds. In case of a tie, it's broken by using WC Owner Points, and since the #30 team is 12th in this week's standings, and the #46 team is 42nd....it's a slam dunk. Benson will start 20th and Wally 21st.
Ward Burton missed the last race at Talladega...he wasn't taking any chances today. He'll start 4th on Sunday.
STREAKIN....Mark Martin has 4 Top-5 starts in the last 5 races.
Here we go with that 1000th's of a second again. With the weather for this weekend kinda iffy, it's conceivable that today's round of time trials could be the only one we'll get in. And, if that's the case, Brett Bodine will miss the field by....you guessed it, 1/1000th of a second. Well, actually 2 (G). He was just 1/1000th's of a second behind Ken Schrader in today's first round, but that puts him in 39th place....and the Bodine team is sans provisionals till the final race at Atlanta. The trouble train this week also includes Kenny Irwin, Ed Berrier, and Dave Marcis (all of those teams have no provisionals available). We look like a field of 43 this week, with Darrell Waltrip again appearing to need that Champs Provisional. If there is a second round Saturday AM, Greg Sacks could be in trouble....they're in that last provisional spot and 39th in the points this week.
The all-time win leader at NCMS is The KING with 11....Cale Yarborough won 7 here. Active win leaders are Rusty Wallace with 5 and Darrell Waltrip with 4. This track has generally been kind to the Pontiacs, tho. The Poncho's have won 6 times here in the 90's, with a Blue Oval taking the top spot 5 times, while the Bow-Tie Brigade has only graced Victory Lane here 4 times in this decade.
With weather a question mark, this could be a long weekend. Dig in and stay tuned.
