RAMBLINGS -- MICHIGAN
Yes, Johnny, you can go home again. Johnny Benson wowed the home folks today, copping his second career pole & first of 1997. We've now had 16 different pole winners in 19 efforts. With 15 of those qualified for the Bud Shootout next February (and a 16th to come from the qualifier), and with 11 races left on the schedule, we may need 2 pace cars to start that race.
New looks this weekend....Gary Bradberry picks up the ride in the #78 replacing Bobby Hillin....Lake Speed has a white hood on that Melling red T-Bird (maybe something in the works?)....the #37 of Jeremy Mayfield has an all K-Mart look this weekend (no RC Cola in sight...this is headquarters country for K-Mart)....the #7 QVC Ford of Geoff Bodine is solid gold this weekend (it's a Klondike Gold Rush)....Lance Hooper keeps the #1 ride for another week....and Close Call is still on the Brett Bodine #11, contrary to the rumors.
STREAKIN....Dale Jarrett (what, again? <G>) has 5 Top-5 starts in a row, and has started Top-10 in 19 of the 21 races this year.
Got a light car-count this weekend....with 44 cars on hand and whats looking to be a 43-car field, the odd man out will probably be Dave Marcis. With the weather iffy, there's a chance today was the only round of qualifying we'll see. Here's the only scenario I see that Marcis could make the field....if there is a second round tomorrow, and the #78 would be bumped out of the Top-38, Marcis could make the field with one of those special provisionals based on last year's owners points. In order to assure full fields, NASCAR awards these special provisionals....the last time it was used was at Martinsville in April, when Bobby Hillin in the #77 made the field. If we do get a 2nd round and Marcis is able to improve enough to make the field, Lake Speed could be in trouble....that team is 36th in owner points.
If this is your typical Michigan Speedway race, there's a pretty good chance it'll come down to fuel mileage....and there's a 55% chance it'll be a Ford product in Victory Lane come Sunday. They've won 31 of the 56 races at this facility (Ford 19, Mercury 12), with David Pearson the all-time leader in wins with 9, Cale Yarborough had 8, and Bill Elliott is the active win leader with 7. Robert Yates Racing has won the last 2 races here in the Irish Hills, and Davey Allison nabbed 2 victories for RYR at this 2-mile facility as well.
This is usually a quick race with few cautions on a wide race track....3 abreast thru the turns is not uncommon. If there is a track that elevated the "Splash & Go" to an art-form, it's MS.
