RAMBLINGS -- DARLINGTON

Bobby Labonte held his breath long enough today to grab his second pole of the season, and 9th of his career. He'll be eligible on Sunday for the Unocal Bonus money of $91,200 (Hey...it may not be a Million, but it'll pay the tire bill!).

Bill Elliott's outside pole is his best qualifying effort since he was the pole-sitter at Phoenix in October of 1995.

Good to see Boxin' Billy Ingle land with the Stavola Bros....Hut & that team need something good to happen, and maybe this will be the spark.

Super-Sub Todd Bodine is in his 4th different Cup car of the season. He ran Texas for Ricky Craven, Charlotte for his brother Geoff, Watkins Glen in a ride for his BGN owners, and he's filling in for David Green this weekend. They'll need to pick it up a little tomorrow, tho...he was 36th in the first round today, and that team is 39th in owner points (could be iffy for a provisional if they fall from the top-38 on time).

STREAKIN....Dale Jarrett has 7 Top-5 starts in a row, and has started in the Top-10 in 21 of the 23 events this season. Mark Martin has 4 Top-10 starts in a row. Ken Schrader has started in the Top-10 in 6 of the last 7 races.

With 46 cars on hand and a field of 43 likely, we'll have 3 teams pack it up early tomorrow....and the 3 most likely for that chore appear to be Dave Marcis, Morgan Shepherd, & Greg Sacks. None of those teams have any provisionals available.

Darrell Waltrip has one of those retro-looks this weekend...and it's slow (G). He could use the Champs Provisional again this week.

We may see a whole bunch of guys try 2nd round tomorrow, tho....there are still 3 front-stretch pit stalls available, and with the probability of numerous yellows looming, where you pit could be almost as important as how fast you pit.

In 86 races at this oldest of all Super-Speedways, only 35 different drivers have graced Victory Lane in Cup competition. The Silver Fox, David Pearson, leads all drivers with 10 lifetime victories, while Dale Earnhardt leads the active contingent with 9. Bill Elliott & Darrell Waltrip have won 5 times each at DR.

Hey, whatcha know....all the way down to line 45 and I only mentioned the word "Million" once? Ah...too mainstream anyway (G).

This "Lady" has been called many things...slick, slippery, tough on tires, too tough to tame...etc. But it's being called a lot of new things this weekend...inside out, upside down, backwards, turned around...you name it. One thing sure to be fun this Sunday will be listening to drivers explaining the wrecks....they usually don't know "how" they happened....this week they won't even know "where" they happened <G>.
