NASCAR Fans Mail List
Joe Nemechek's world is looking up....a new baby, and now his first WC pole at the inaugural race for the new California Speedway. You could almost see it coming tho....he'd started outside pole twice this season (including last week), he's been a Top-5 starter in 4 of the last 5 events, and that run at Pocono (where he blew an engine during quals and was 2nd round fastest) may be the only thing that's slowed that team down in the last month. Now if Tony Glover & the crew can give Joe a car to last the 500 miles, maybe they'll give Felix something to smile about.
Nemechek becomes the 10th driver to qualify for the '98 Busch Clash. He'll join Mike Skinner, Mark Martin, Robby Gordon, Dale Jarrett, Rusty Wallace, Kenny Wallace, John Andretti, Jeff Gordon, and Bobby Labonte in the prestigious pole-winners only dash for cash next February. Jarrett & Martin are the only 2 drivers this year with 2 poles.
Hey, anybody else wonder what happened to that missing palm tree? How do you build a track and use 299 palm trees? Did one die? Were they one short in shipment (there must be a price break at 300 (G))? Did Roger Penske & Les Richter run over it in that Cadillac? Enquiring minds, you know.......
Looks like Greg Sacks won't get the weekend off after all...at least not because of lack of a ride. With Robby's crash today, Sacks was in the backup car but could do no better than 34th in the 1st round.
Ernie Irvan's 2nd place run was his best since he grabbed the pole at 'Dega last April.....and we all remember what happened there. Can you say "Chassis Dyno"? I'll betcha Robert Yates is standing guard tonight with a whip & a chair!
Ken Schrader had his best effort for Andy Petree...this is his best starting spot since Phoenix last fall in the Bud car.
STREAKIN....Dale Jarrett's run continues. He's now started Top-10 7 straight times, 14 out of 15 this season, and 18 of the last 19 races, going back to last season.
With a field of 42 assured (all the former champs are in), there's gonna be 3 cars packing up early.....and that's an awful long haul to miss the dance. Depending on whether the track turns up faster tomorrow morning, it could be rather interesting around the NASCAR trailer to see who stands on time and who elects a 2nd round attempt. The trouble train includes: Billy Standridge & Mike Wallace (they have no provisionals available), and at least one regular is gonna have to go too.....and it looks like Mike Skinner could be that one.
The WC Series is pretty staid, so to visit _2_ new race tracks in one season is pretty much news in itself. After all, we've only added 6 new tracks to the schedule in the last 10 years....Phoenix in '88, Sears Point in '89, New Hampshire in '93, Indy in '94, and Texas earlier this season. If we can get a second groove worked in at this Penske Palace, this could become one of the driver & fan favorites right off the bat.
