Gordon slips to fourth in rankings

Formula One star Michael Schumacher's position at the head of the Champion Spark Plug World Driver Rankings was strengthened over the weekend when Jeff Gordon finished second in the Winston 500 at Talladega Superspeedway Sunday. Gordon has now slipped to fourth place behind Schumacher, Formula One's Mika Hakkinen, and Alex Zanardi of the CART/Fed Ex Championship Series.

The pressure is on Gordon to keep winning in the NASCAR Winston Cup Series to overtake Schumacher in the unofficial guide to finding the world's best driver. Schumacher has one more opportunity to score points, while Gordon has three before the champion is declared.

The rankings are based on a rotating performance basis, so every new race that is added to a driver's ranking replaces the oldest one.

Mark Martin remains fifth in the rankings, followed by fellow NASCAR stars Dale Jarrett in 11th and Rusty Wallace in 19th.
