NASCAR WINSTON CUP STOCK CAR TESTING ENDS AT DAYTONA -- 1-25-95
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Michael Waltrip Wednesday ran the fastest lap of the winter in NASCAR Winston Cup stock car testing at Daytona International Speedway, when he was clocked at 192.802 mph in the Bahari Racing Pontiac Grand Prix. Waltrip eclipsed the previous best lap, 192.555 mph by Dale Jarrett in a Ford Thunderbird, on his last run of the day while preparing for the Feb. 19 Daytona 500.
Second-quickest on Wednesday was Joe Nemechek, who celebrated his announcement of a Burger King primary sponsorship for his Nemco Motorsports Chevrolets by running 192.513 mph.
Other quick times were posted by Darrell Waltrip, 191.980; and Robert Pressley and Terry Labonte, who each ran 191.816 in Chevrolet Monte Carlos.
The track will be quiet on Thursday, before IMSA sports cars stage a two-day test, Friday and Saturday, in preparation for the Feb. 4-5 Rolex 24 At Daytona, which will kick off Speedweeks '95.
Seven-time NASCAR Winston Cup champ Dale Earnhardt will be heading to Daytona and Speedweeks with two things on his mind: getting a good start on winning a record-breaking eighth title AND winning his first Daytona 500. Winston Cup titles have come easier for the driver of the Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet than an extremely elusive victory in the 500.
"It's important to win any race or finish strong in any race, especially if you're running for the points and the championship," said Earnhardt during GM's last test day. "That's been our game plan, everybody's game plan, coming into Daytona. You work toward that first race and trying to win it. Of course, it's the biggest race of the dang year -- and one I've never won."
Earnhardt and team owner Childress are hoping this is the year they visit victory lane.
"They've shuffled the deck and everybody starts the season with a new hand," explained Childress in a poker-playing analogy. "We hope we draw some good cards. The key to winning is making things happen -- the right things at the right time. We're as good as we've ever been. We don't come to Daytona with anything on our minds but victory."
"The hardest thing about winning the title," continued Childress, "is the commitment you make in being a championship team -- to the fans, the sponsors and the media. It's tough. You can very easily lose your perspective, your objective, and get pulled away from where you need to be because of the demands. Our goals don't change -- win races and win another championship."
