Gatorade enhances award program

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Feb. 2, 1998) Officials from the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing and Gatorade, the "official sports beverage of NASCAR," jointly announced Monday that Gatorade, coinciding with NASCAR's 50th Anniversary Celebration. has enhanced its Gatorade Front Runner Award program for the NASCAR Winston Cup Series and all of NASCAR's racing divisions.

The Gatorade Front Runner Program, introduced in 1995, is designed to award drivers who are leading the halfway point of each NASCAR event and the halfway point of the NASCAR Winston Cup and NASCAR Winston Racing Series seasons. In 1998, there will be a year-end Gatorade Front Runner Award in the NASCAR Winston Cup, NASCAR Busch Series Grand National Division and NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series as well as all eight of NASCAR's touring divisions.

The enhanced program, which has been extended to include the entire schedule in each NASCAR division, will award points to the top-three positions at the halfway point of each race as follows: First place receives five points, second place receives three points and third place receives one point. Points will be cumulative for all scheduled races.

A $10,000 Gatorade Front Runner Award will be presented to the leader at the halfway lap of each NASCAR Winston Cup Series championship point event. In addition, a $30,000 bonus will be awarded to the driver leading the Gatorade Front Runner Award standings after the 17th race of the season. At the end of the NASCAR Winston Cup Series season, a $50,000 bonus will be awarded to the Gatorade Front Runner champion -- the driver who has accumulated the most Gatorade Front Runner points during the entire 33-race NASCAR Winston Cup Series championship point schedule.

The enhanced Gatorade Front Runner Program will continue to extend through all 12 divisions of NASCAR with per race and season awards.

The NASCAR Busch Series and NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series competitors will vie for a $2,000 award at each event with a $10,000 year-end award going to the Gatorade Front Runner champion.

In the NASCAR Busch North Series Grand National Division, competitors will battle for $600 at each event with $5,000 going to the year-end program winner. Competitors in the NASCAR Winston West Series vie for $400 per race and a $4,000 year-end award.

Competitors in the NASCAR Slim Jim All Pro Series, NASCAR Goody's Dash Series, NASCAR Featherlite Southwest Tour, NASCAR Northwest Tour, NASCAR Featherlite Modified Tour and NASCAR Busch All-Star Tour will compete for a $300 per race award and a $2,500 year-end bonus to the Gatorade Front Runner Award program winner.

The per race Gatorade Front Runner Award will give the driver at the halfway point of each race a bonus provided the halfway lap is run under green. Should the halfway lap be run under caution the award will go to the driver leading at the completion of the fifth green flag lap following the caution.

In addition, there will be a $5,000 award presented to the Gatorade Front Runner Award points leader at the halfway mark of the NASCAR Winston Racing Series season.

"We are thrilled that Gatorade has offered to enhance its Gatorade Front Runner Award program." said George Pyne, vice president of licensing and consumer products for NASCAR. "Gatorade has a long history with our sport and continues to support NASCAR racing from the grassroots level all the way up to the NASCAR Winston Cup Series."

"Gatorade has had a long and successful relationship with NASCAR and it is only fitting that we enhance our involvement during NASCAR's 50th Anniversary Celebration season," said Bill Schmidt, vice president, worldwide Gatorade sports marketing. "The Gatorade Front Runner Award has been a successful program for us and has added additional excitement to NASCAR racing for the fans."

In addition to its enhanced Gatorade Front Runner program, Gatorade is currently offering a NASCAR 50th Anniversary schedule cup in Circle K stores throughout the United States and plans to feature NASCAR's 50th Anniversary in various promotions this summer throughout the country.
