NASCAR's 50th anniversary quarterly theme: fans
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Sept. 23, 1998) The tables will turn in the final quarter of NASCAR's 50th Anniversary when the fans are celebrated for their tremendous contribution to a half-century of NASCAR.
From Sept. 16 through the season finale at Atlanta Motor Speedway, NASCAR's 50th Anniversary celebration will focus on the millions of fans who have made NASCAR Winston Cup racing the fastest-growing spectator sport in America.
From the shores of the Daytona Beach Road Course in the 1940s and 50s to the new Las Vegas Motor Speedway, the millions of fans who filled the grandstands, watched on television and listened on the radio provided the foundation for NASCAR Winston Cup racing to grow beyond all expectations. The desire to show its appreciation for 50 years of support was the impetus for NASCAR to dedicate the final quarter of the 50th Anniversary celebration to its fans.
As part of the fan quarter, NASCAR has announced a promotion which will allow fans unprecedented, behind-the-scenes opportunities to produce a NASCAR Winston Cup event. NASCAR's Fan Fantasy Weekend will take place at the season-ending NAPA 500, Nov. 8, at Atlanta Motor Speedway.
"This is the most fan-oriented program we've ever developed in NASCAR's 50-year history," said Brian France, senior vice president of NASCAR. "One of our goals at NASCAR is to get our fans as close to the action as possible. NASCAR's Fan Fantasy Weekend takes that goal to the next level and lets fans actually help make an event happen. We can't think of a better way to thank our loyal fans and wrap up the 50th Anniversary celebration."
The fan promotion is tied through NASCAR's media partners: ESPN, NASCAR Winston Cup Scene and NASCAR Online. NASCAR's Fan Fantasy Weekend promotion will test fans on their NASCAR knowledge and 10 fans will be randomly chosen to have an honorary position in a NASCAR Winston Cup event.
By answering four 50th Anniversary quarterly themed questions correctly, 10 NASCAR fans will have the opportunity to fill the following positions: NASCAR Technical Inspector Victory Lane assistant Flag person - wave the checkered flag NASCAR Winston Cup Scene photographer Pace car passenger to start the race NASCAR Online photographer ESPN reporter Driver Introductions Assistant PRN radio reporter Driver's Meeting Assistant
To enter NASCAR's Fan Fantasy Weekend promotion, fans should watch the Sept. 27 ESPN broadcast at Martinsville (Va.) Speedway or read NASCAR Winston Cup Scene for the 900 number to call in all four answers (each call costs $1.99). Entrants can also log on to NASCAR Online and enter the four answers. Winners, who must have four correct answers, will be chosen at random by Oct. 5 and must be at least 21 years of age. NASCAR will host a press conference at Atlanta Motor Speedway to announce the winners and the positions they will fill.
Other quarterly themes during NASCAR's 50th Anniversary celebration included NASCAR Legends (Dec. 16, 1997 - March 15), NASCAR Rivalries (March 16 - June 15) and NASCAR Country (June 16 - Sept. 15). Source: NASCAR Online
