ELLIOTT SADLER --21-- Motorcraft Taurus

"I don't know. I thought I ran a pretty decent lap, but I left a little bit on the table. I got loose a few times. I think just going out first hurt. The track was a little slick, but I probably didn't hit all the right marks I needed to either. We're just gonna have to sweat it out. Hopefully we'll make it. We don't mind taking provisionals as long as we get to race here on Sunday because we've been having some good finishes which has kept us up in the points. We just have to hope and see what happens."

BRETT BODINE --11-- Ralphs Supermarkets/RedCell Batteries Taurus

"The car just isn't very fast. We just cannot get any speed out of it. It feels like it's driving pretty good and I felt like I did a good job on that lap, but it just isn't quick. I don't understand it. We've run so good here in the past. Hopefully, that's gonna be good enough to get us in the top 36. It could be questionable."

JIMMY SPENCER --26-- Kmart Taurus

"I just spun out, it was driver error. I had a really good lap going and I came off the turn and was going down the back straightaway and just didn't slow the car down enough. I just got into the corner a little bit too hard and lost the tail and spun out. The track was kind of slick, but that didn't have anything to do with it. I just made a mistake."

RUSTY WALLACE --2-- Miller Lite Taurus

DID THE EARLY DRAW HURT?

"Oh yeah, it sure didn't help. When we saw number four I went, 'Oh, man.' Everytime you come out here and get an early number it's hard because the asphalt gets hot and oily. You need five or six -- 10 to 15 cars to run on it and compact that junk back down in there, but, hey, we ran a 17.07 after an .02 in practice. I really thought we could get in the 16-second bracket, but it didn't happen."

BRIAN SIMO --90-- Hills Brothers Taurus

"I'm just happy to be here and I just want to put this car in the show for the Hills Brothers team. This single-lap qualifying is a new deal to me and I'm still shaking. I'm excited. I don't know how we're gonna stack up. I'm hoping for these guys we're in the front half of the field. I'm just happy to be here."

IS IT ANY EASIER THIS YEAR BECAUSE YOU RAN THIS CAR A YEAR AGO AS WELL?

"No. My expectations are no less -- on myself or from the team. That was my first race at Sears Point last year and we've made some big improvements, but we didn't test like I think I'd like to -- to be able to get in and spend some time in the car. I just don't know the car. The car is better than me. The team is better than me, so I'm the weak link here and I'm just gonna do the best I can."

RICKY CRAVEN --32-- Tide Taurus

"We broke a transmission (in practice) and we lost a lot of critical time. I haven't been here since '97. It sounds like an excuse, but it's the best one I've got. I needed track time. They really made some good changes before qualifying. From my perspective, the lap was not very pretty but I just rung it out -- whatever I had. The guys did a good job on the car so it stuck. There were a couple of times where I really thought I over-did it, but I'll be darned -- we made it."

RICKY RUDD --28-- Texaco Havoline Taurus

"There was one corner back there -- seven -- that new section where you turn to start up the esses. We were really good up to that point, but we made some tire pressure changes right before qualifying. We were really fast until we got to that point. Our segments were right on until I got in there and I broke loose getting into that corner. That's the first time I broke loose all day, so I guess we just misjudged it a little bit. We'll have to start in the back and try to get better."

ROBBY GORDON --7-- NationsRent Taurus

"I missed that one. It was okay, but I screwed up. I watched (Jeff) Gordon do those laps and I knew that I needed to find four-tenths. I knew he was beating me into one. I just drove in a little deep. The front end touched the frame and started pushing, so I shoved it in third gear and got the car to rotate, but I just slid and probably lost a half-a-second right there. That was probably the difference between the front row and where we end up." YOU'VE BEEN GOOD ALL DAY THOUGH. "Yeah. I'm very happy. I appreciate the opportunity. I'm happy for NationsRent. We'll definitely get them in the show and, hopefully, we'll stay somewhere in the top 10 and everyone will be happy."

BORIS SAID --77-- Subway/Jasper Engines Taurus

"I screwed up and drove off the road into the dirt. I made a mistake. It was just pilot error."

TODD BODINE --66-- Route 66/Kmart Taurus

"That's the worst lap I ran all day. I missed a shift up the hill. I got loose a couple of places, but we ran the same time we ran in practice so the car was probably better. We made some adjustments that made it hook loose a little bit, but we'll take it. We're gonna be in the show."

MARK MARTIN --6-- Pfizer Taurus

"I paid for that one. I slid off and I don't know why. I was obviously going too fast, but I wasn't either. I'm not gonna drive around this place slow. I came out here to race and that's what I'm gonna do. If it means sliding off the track, then that means we need to work on the car some more. It was my fault, but it wasn't necessarily from overdriving. It was from the car not doing what I needed it to do and that's largely my responsibility. I've got to tell them what to do. I've been off before and I knew why -- from overdriving -- but I don't feel that I was really over my head by any means here. I just started sliding and didn't stop."

MATT KENSETH --17-- AT&T/DEWALT Power Tools Taurus

"It was okay. It's about the same time we ran in practice, so I'm really happy with that. Everybody else seemed to slow up a little bit or a lot of cars did. My lap wasn't really very great, it was just average and it was real solid. I was real careful to make sure I didn't slide off the course. I didn't want to be on Gilligan's Island this year and be at such a big disadvantage during the race. Actually, as bad as we've been qualifying this might be our best qualifying effort of the year so we're pretty happy with that."

RUSTY WALLACE PRESS CONFERENCE

"I thought it was a pretty good lap. That's about all I had in me, to tell you the truth. I don't know what corner it is down there, but I messed one up. They've got so many doggone corners around here I can't keep track of all of 'em. But, no, I had a good lap. I was happy with it. We ran a 17.02 in practice and ran an .07 in qualifying and I felt like I left maybe a little bit laying down there, but I don't think that was gonna beat Jeff. I'm happy with the front row and that was a good run for us." WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THE NEW SECTION OF THE TRACK? "I don't know. Personally, it's better than last year I think. There might be another area to pass in. I'm still a big fan of the original old race track we used to have here, but that's gone and will never come back now. But it is better than it was last year." IF THEY PUT RON FELLOWS IN YOUR CAR, WOULD HE BE FASTER THAN YOU? "What do you mean, man? I go to every track thinking I'm the man. (Laughter) There's no dude that can outrun me. Maybe Jeff (Gordon), that's about it. (Laughter). No, man, if you think you can get beat by anybody you might as well hang it up and be a plumber, you know. (Laughter) And I need a plumber at my house, by the way."
