Here are some notes on Ford teams and the cars they will be running this weekend:
2 RUSTY WALLACE
Rusty has 3 Dover wins on his resume, which includes a season sweep in '94...also has 3 poles at this track, including a track record speed of 159.964 mph last fall...leads all drivers this year with 3 poles (Rockingham, Martinsville and Richmond)...has led the most laps of any driver in 2000 with 752...racing "Bristol" this weekend...that's the name he gave this car after winning its debut earlier this year at Bristol Motor Speedway...that marked Rusty's 50th career NWC win...led 3 times for 86 laps, including the final 76, to post that historic victory..."Bristol" has not raced since then.
6 MARK MARTIN
The last driver to win here at Dover as he captured the MBNA Gold 400 here in the fall for the 3rd straight time...led 7 times for a race-high 161 laps...has the same car he won that race with this weekend (JR-52)...raced once this season with that being in Atlanta, where he finished 3rd...has one win this year (Martinsville), which tied him for 17th-place on the all-time NWC win list at 32 with the late Fireball Roberts ...all of his 32 wins have been in a Ford, ranking him 3rd behind Ned Jarrett (43) and Bill Elliott (40) on the all-time Ford win list.
9 STACY COMPTON
Compton and the Kodiak team came to Dover after testing Thursday at Pocono...comes into the weekend having qualified for all 11 races this season, but is still looking for his first top 20 finish...had a career best 22nd-place finish at Richmond last month, but struggled last week at Charlotte (finishing 33rd)...Compton has driven this car 3 times in '00, including two weeks ago in The Winston Open...car has raced at Rockingham (finished 34th) and Bristol (finished 28th). 11 BRETT BODINE
Bodine has qualified for 8 of the last 9 races with the only miss in that stretch coming at Talladega...has struggled, however, by not finishing any higher than 30th in the last 4 races...Bodine's best finish in '00 remains 16th, which he achieved at Atlanta... ran this car previously in Bristol, where he started 24th and finished 22nd.
12 JEREMY MAYFIELD
Mayfield has been as consistent as any team the last month despite being without crew chief Peter Sospenzo, who is scheduled to return from his suspension next week at Michigan ...with shop manager Buddy Sisco taking over crew chief duties the team has responded positively... Mayfield is coming off a 6th-place finish in last week's Coca-Cola 600 in which he led twice for 7 laps during the early stages ...was leading The Winston until he lost third gear and was forced to the garage...earned the 2nd win of his NWC career last month at California ...raced this car at Bristol and had a great run, finishing 4th after starting the event 17th.
16 KEVIN LEPAGE
Coming off two solid weeks at Lowe's Motor Speedway in which he finished 2nd in the 16-lap No Bull Sprint and 15th in the Coca-Cola 600 after qualifying 6th...that marked the 4th time Lepage has qualified in the top 10 this season...sat on the outside pole at Darlington and Texas for his best starting spot of 2000...moved up two spots to 26th in the point standings and is only 19 points behind Joe Nemechek for that 25th spot...hopes to keep climbing with the same car Lepage captured his first NWC pole with at Atlanta last year...also drove this car to a top-five finish in the Bud Shootout and 6th-place effort in The Winston Open...only points race this year was Atlanta, where he qualified 5th and finished 38th after his rear axle broke following a pit stop.
17 MATT KENSETH
Returns to Dover, which was the site of his NWC debut two years ago when he subbed for Bill Elliott in the No. 94 McDonald's Taurus...finished 6th that afternoon after starting 16th...coming off the first win of his NWC career last weekend at Charlotte in the Coca-Cola 600...took the lead with only 26 laps remaining and then held off Bobby Labonte...increased his lead in the rookie of the year battle over Dale Earnhardt, Jr. to 5 points...now has three top-10 finishes in 2000 (3rd at California and 6th at Darlington)...will be running his Rockingham car which qualified 6th and finished 37th.
21 ELLIOTT SADLER
Sadler hopes his luck continues to turn this weekend after he posted a 21st-place finish in last week's Coca-Cola 600...stuck in 34th place in the point standings because of extremely bad luck...had a tire shred and come through the floorboard at Texas that lacerated his left shoulder and forced him out of the car...had a freak failure at California when the balancer broke off the front part of the motor...started 9th at Bristol and got spun on the 2nd lap which resulted in a 41st-place finish...had good success with this car at Darlington earlier this year as he set season highs in qualifying (6th) and finishing position (12th). 26 JIMMY SPENCER
Spencer has shown signs the last month of becoming a consistent threat, but suffered through a frustrating Coca-Cola 600 in which he started 11th but finished 25th ...won one of the No Bull 25 sprints prior to The Winston Open, but his surge started at Talladega, where he finished 5th and continued one week later when he qualified on the outside pole at California...hit the wall with 31 laps left while running in the top 10 and finished 40th...bounced back with a 17th-place effort at Richmond and now sits 23rd in the point standings ...will race the same car he had at California and Bristol, where he finished 40th and 18th respectively.
28 RICKY RUDD
Rudd comes to Dover, where he has 4 career victories...that's more than any other track for the driver of the No. 28 Texaco Havoline Taurus...coming off a disappointing 17th-place finish at Charlotte in which he was a contender most of the night until some loose lugnuts forced him to pit under green and lose a lap...had posted season-best back-to-back fourth-place finishes at California and Richmond prior to last week...currently sits 9th in points, whereas a year ago at this time he was mired in 39th...this car is sort of a half-old, half-new piece...crew chief Michael McSwain said the cage portion of the car ran at Bristol, but the rest of the car is brand new because the team wasn't happy with its Bristol performance.
32 SCOTT PRUETT
Pruett and the PPI team have undergone a few changes the past month...Doug Richert was released after the California race and has been replaced on an interim basis by team manager Joe Garone, who served as crew chief for Bill Elliott at one time last year...team has also made some changes on the pit crew, inserting Shane Callis (jackman) and Clay Robinson (front tire changer) into the lineup...this car will hopefully have some better luck than its previous appearance on track...car got loose and hit the wall during second round qualifying at Bristol and did not make the field. 66 DARRELL WALTRIP
Waltrip continues to persevere despite not having any provisionals to fall back on until Sears Point later this month...did not qualify at Richmond or Charlotte, but made the Coca-Coca 600 field by driving the No. 85 Taurus of Carl Long, who qualified 35th...has 2 career Dover wins ('80 and '82)...tested this car here at Dover a couple of weeks ago...ran at Bristol and qualified 13th (finished 31st).
75 WALLY DALLENBACH
Since Newt Moore came aboard as crew chief at Talladega, Dallenbach and the Galaxy Motorsports team have shown marked improvement... had a season-high 16th place finish at Talladega in their debut and matched that last month at Richmond...also had their best qualifying effort of the year at Richmond having started 8th... coming off a 28th-place effort at Charlotte last week...Dallenbach will be putting a brand new car on the track this weekend, one that has not been tested prior to Friday's practice. 77 ROBERT PRESSLEY
Pressley is looking for his first top-20 finish since placing 15th at Martinsville four races ago...coming off a 26th-place showing last week at Charlotte and a 35th-place finish at Richmond, where he hit the wall...27th in the point standings, but is only 21 points out of 25th...team spent all but four weeks in 35th place or lower in '99... has qualified in first round 8 times in the last 10 races...this car has 3 races on its resume -- Rockingham, Darlington and Richmond...best finish of those 3 events was an 18th at Darlington. 88 DALE JARRETT
Jarrett and his crew seem to be finding a groove recently after registering back-to-back top-five finishes at Richmond (3rd) and Charlotte (5th)...currently 6th in the standings trailing leader Bobby Labonte by 146 points, but he chopped 80 points off of that with his Richmond performance ...won this race in '98 for his only NWC victory at Dover...will have the same car this weekend that made it to victory lane that day...car has run primarily at Bristol (5 races) and Dover since '97.
90 ED BERRIER
This will mark the third race for Berrier and new crew chief Dean Johnson...duo is still looking to qualify for their first race together after missing out at Richmond and Charlotte...Berrier has made 4 races in 2000 and his best finish is 28th (Talladega)...qualified 18th with this car at Texas, his best starting spot of the year, and finished 35th after his motor blew up.
94 BILL ELLIOTT
After a dominant performance in Charlotte during The Winston in which he won the pole and two segments, Elliott suffered a blown motor in last week's Coca-Cola 600 and finished 43rd...as a result he dropped to 15th in the point standings, which is the lowest he's been this season...has 5 top-10 finishes in 2000 after having only two in all of 1999...has qualified in the top 10 a total of 8 times in 12 races...will be driving the car named "Rock Crusher"...it's the team's primary concrete car and gained its name after racing at Bristol in March.
97 CHAD LITTLE
Despite a 38th-place starting position, Little once again moved through the pack to post a 20th-place finish...that marked the 4th time this season Little has started 37th or worse and finished in the top 20 (Rockingham 38th/18th; Darlington 37th/15th); and California 38th/15th)...has fallen 7 spots in the point standings over the last 7 races (11th to 18th)... his best finish of 2000 is a 6th at Atlanta...this will represent crew chief Jeff Hammond's 500th NWC race as a crew chief (43 wins) ...the car Little will drive ran both Dover races last season and had a 7th-place finish here in the fall... competed at Martinsville in April and ran 27th. 99 JEFF BURTON
Has been on a pretty good roll of late, posting 7 top-10 finishes in the last 9 races...just missed extending that last week at Charlotte, where he finished 11th...has had great success at Dover, where he has 3 straight top-10 finishes in this event and 5 top-10s in his last 8 Dover starts...has had success with this car, winning 4 times with it last year, including the No Bull 5 million at Darlington...car also won races at Loudon, Rockingham and spring Darlington race in '99.
