FORD RACING NOTES AND QUOTES BUD SHOOTOUT QUALIFIER February 7, 1999 Daytona International Speedway
JIMMY SPENCER -23- Team Winston Taurus -- "We had a great pit stop and, well, I guess the air hose got caught. We had an awesome pit stop and the air hose got caught, so that held us a little bit. I tried to make up for it and got caught for speeding. You've gotta win this race and wherever we did finish doesn't really matter to me. I don't think it matters to my team guys either. They want to try to win. Sometimes NASCAR doesn't catch cars, they caught us today. There are a lot of times people will question NASCAR's calls, but I was speeding so what can I say?
WERE YOU HAPPY WITH THE WAY THE CAR RAN? "I'm really happy. We learned a lot last year with our Tauruses. That's the car we ran second with at Talladega and it pulled up really good, you could hold on to the throttle. That was 15 laps and that was as important to me as anything this week. Yesterday, qualifying didn't mean anything. If you weren't first or second you've gotta run the twins. That's where it counts. That car there showed me that it was gonna do alright, so I think we'll transfer some of that to the twin car. Thursday is a different game and, hopefully, we can get the car real good and try to win that race." DID YOU SECOND-GUESS NOT STAYING OUT FOR THIS RACE WITH THE YELLOW COMING OUT? "No because I would have been in the rear of the field and I also could have torn a race car up. I also could have won the race. If ifs and buts were candy and nuts, everyday would be Christmas. Today isn't Christmas for us."
BILL ELLIOTT -94- McDonald's Taurus -- "It's hard to get there from here. The car ran well, you needed help to get there. I made a big mistake trying to follow Nemechek there at the beginning on the outside. That was a huge mistake. Dick Trickle helped me in the NationsRent car a little bit and I was able to do a few things at the end and gain a few spots. I just ran out of time."
DID YOU LEARN SOME THINGS THAT MIGHT HELP ON THURSDAY IN THE TWINS? "Yeah, the car really ran well up off the corner. We just need to tweak on it in a few other places. This Drive-Thru crew is doing a heckuva job and we just need to expand on it a little bit more."
IS IT GOOD TO GET THAT FIRST PIT STOP AND FIRST RACE OUT OF THE WAY IN AN EVENT LIKE THIS WHERE NO POINTS ARE ON THE LINE? "Yeah, you kind of get a lot of the rough edges knocked off today and it's good just to run around those guys like that, get pretty racey and kind of see how the car is handling. It's good to also let the crew guys broken in good, so we'll see what happens come next Thursday."
ROBERT PRESSLEY -77- Jasper Engines Taurus -- "If it had been one-on-one, I think we could have done it. There were just too many Chevrolets back there. I had to keep the seat I had and hope the Chevorlots decided to go with me. Whenever Parks dropped out there, I knew it was over then. I was hoping that maybe Mike (Skinner) would do something. Maybe move out of the way or go a little high, but he done a good job and done what he was supposed to. That Chevrolet is strong. But I'm real proud of this Jasper Ford. The transmission and gear ratio we've got. It was awesome on them take-offs. We're just getting ready for the 125's. What we done today will really help us get ready for second day qualifying. We've got a pretty decent set-up right here, and everything is looking better. We struggled so bad last year on the restrictor plate races so all winter that's one thing we really focused on. Our test has already paid off. We've got another one coming up at Talladega, so if we can get our program squared away, we'll be all right."
JERRY NADEAU -9- Cartoon Network Taurus -- "It was a lot of fun. It is a good race to prepare yourself for the 500. You can feel what the car is going to do. Although this isn't even the race car we're going to race. You can tell a lot about set-ups. That's really what we learned out there. We were really hurting a lot when we got out and were trying to pass people. We just couldn't get any help from behind. I couldn't believe they threw the green flag. That was a terrible start. We fell all the way back to dead last. Then as we got going it seemed like a couple times we got shuffled out, and then I worked my way up to the top-five. And Pardus got on the inside of me, and I don't think he knew we were three wide and we got together, and then I got together with Geoff Bodine, and that was about a big mess right there. I'm glad we came out of it clean and could finish seventh or eighth. We'll just take what we got, and go on for next weekend."
DICK TRICKLE -13- Nations Rent Taurus -- "This car here ain't a real clean car as far as aero and stuff. It's kind of a back-up, back-up car. The guys really did a terrific job. We actually run every bit as good as we thought we would. One car was just so strong. He got his nose underneath me, and drove right up along side of me, and then I got freight-trained. And then I come back up a little bit, and then we had a fender in the way of a tire, and with a bad pit stop we got delegated back to the rear after our pit stop. We've got to work on our gearing. The car wouldn't restart well. I think we've got the wrong gearing in our transmission. We've got to work on it. I think it was a lot of fun. The guys are doing a good job for me. Thanks to the Nations Rent people for sponsoring the car and to Bill Elliott for calling me up to drive it because I'm having fun."
